1986 Porsche 928 S4

Highlights

  • Recommissioned after 6 years in storage
  • Rare Cobalt Blue
  • Ready to use or improve

The Appeal

Porsche’s attempt to replace the 911 with a front engined car was ultimately unsuccessful but at least provided us with the quick and capable GT car that is the 928. Arguably under-appreciated when new, of late they have come to be more widely respected as a modern classic and prices have been climbing steadily.
This example is in the rare and striking shade of Cobalt Blue and has recently been brought out of hibernation and recommissioned at a cost of over £2,000. It now runs well and is very usable though with some opportunities for cosmetic improvements, notably to the interior.
So if you’re looking for something stylish as a rolling project and with the added bonus of pop up headlights then this could be the car for you. Alternatively, if values continue on their current trajectory then it could be worthy of a more comprehensive restoration. Either way, get your bid in now.

The Interior

  • Black leather with cream piping
  • Usable but with some wear
  • Scope to improve cosmetics
The cabin has a suitably upmarket GT car feel with soft leather, plush carpets and a high level of equipment but does show signs of a life well lived with the driver’s seat bolster worn through and a split on the side of the passenger seat.
The electric seats, windows and sunroof all work just fine and, although the dash is cracked, there’s still nothing to get in the way of actually enjoying the car. The carpet in the driver’s footwell could do with glueing down but it doesn’t get in the way of the pedals, for example.
In the boot the underside of the carpet has seen better days but isn’t usually visible and it’s unclear whether the tray that’s fitted is original. Up above, however, is an intriguing feature in rear sun blinds, apparently present because rear seat passengers sit far enough back to be beneath the rear window.
In all, there is clearly scope for improvement but the car is perfectly usable in its current condition.

The Exterior

  • Rare Cobalt Blue
  • Presents well
  • New front tyres
With clean lines, pop up headlights and finished in a stunning shade of blue, this car is certainly an attention-grabber. It’s very presentable and the paintwork is reported to be in generally good condition, with a few minor marks such as the scratch to the lower edge of the front spoiler. The bodywork is straight and free from dents but the rubber trim has aged a little and could use a refresh to bring it back to its best.
The wheels show a few marks but are in generally good condition and wear fresh tyres on the front, while the rears have ample tread. The seller speculates that the car must have been garaged for much of its life because he describes the underside as very neat and tidy with no visible corrosion.

The Mechanics

  • Very original engine bay
  • 5 litre V8
  • Drives very well
If this car has one little foible it is that the immobiliser requires locking and unlocking of the car before the car can be started each time. With that out of the way, fresh from its recent recommissioning work, the car starts reliably and ticks over with a gentle V8 burble.
The owner informs us that the car drives well, changing through the gears smoothly, braking well and with no untoward noises from the suspension or drivetrain. He reports that it revs freely and makes a suitably sporty sound without being too loud, very much in line with its GT brief. Mechanically, then, it’s ready to go.

Summary

A distinctive modern classic GT with scope for some improvements but that can be enjoyed immediately.
