The Appeal

The final models of the classic-era Porsche 911 fit into the archetypal image of the go-go 1980s as perfectly as red braces, Filofaxes and Babycham. And the ‘Carrera’ badge carries a huge weight of history and significance. While its importance may have been diluted in modern-era Porsche model structures and used as shorthand for ‘base model’, that wasn’t always the case: in the early days, Porsche started gluing this badge onto 356s to celebrate their mighty prowess in the Carrera Panamericana, a race so uncompromising that even finishing in one piece was by no means a given. 

Carrera was a badge of honour. And so it carried through to the 1980s, when a 911 was the pinnacle of road car supremacy. Sure, kids had posters of Ferrari F40s and Lamborghini Countachs on their bedroom walls, but they had 930 Turbos blu-tacked up there too, and the key difference was that this was an achievable supercar. Forget your Italian trinkets with their inherent histrionics, the German alternative was a far better bet for everyday dream-weaving. And elsewhere in the model range we find this car, the 911 Carrera 3.2. It boasts every one of those aspirational 1980s ingredients – the Fuchs wheels, the timeless styling, the drop-top. It’s such an iconic form, it truly is the stuff that dreams are made of. Just like in period, a 1980s 911 today has the uncanny ability to make children gasp and grown-ups yearn. And this particular example is a truly desirable one – with just 78k miles on the clock from new,

it’s in tidy and original condition and beautifully presented throughout. Its current owners have had it since 2017, when they searched high and low for the best possible example of the 3.2 available, travelling up to Scotland to bring it back down to Surrey. It’s enjoyed gentle usage over the years (indeed, it’s only covered 1,076 miles since 2007); there’s a huge file of paperwork and a long MOT – it’s ready to enjoy.

The Interior

The cream hide offers a tasteful counterpoint to the inky blue exterior, and it makes for a cabin that feels eminently cosy and luxurious. This 911’s interior is complete, correct and in good order throughout. Indeed, the only deviation from standard spec is the modern head unit and speakers, although the original Blaupunkt will also be included in the sale. The seats are in good condition front and rear, with the fronts both tilting correctly to allow access. The carpets are in good condition, and the electric windows raise and lower as they should. The manual soft-top roof is in lovely condition with a nice clear window pane, and is easy to raise, latch and lower.

The struts for the front boot could do with replacing (a very simple job), but it’s all dry and tidy in there, with the correct space-saver spare wheel and tool roll.

The Exterior

The colour specification of this car is highly sought-after, being Prussian Blue with a dark blue hood to complement the creamy interior. And the simple form looks so elegant and sylph-like in a modern context; so many of these Carreras were optioned with the ‘Turbo-look’ package to add the whale-tail and wide wings, but without those trinkets this Carrera can really speak for itself.

The paint is good throughout and all body panels appear straight and true with no obvious evidence of corrosion. The correct badging and trim is all in place, and all of the window glass and light lenses are in good order. A pretty set of OEM Fuchs alloys are fitted, which have recently been treated to new tyres.

The Mechanicals

This air-cooled, rear-engined layout is one of the most evocative setups in automotive history. The 3.2-litre flat-six is backed up by a robust service history, and we’re assured by the owner that it’s a joyful thing to drive. It starts on the first turn of the key, and immediately settles into an even idle.

The servicing is all up to date and the oil cooler has recently been replaced. The sound-deadening material at the top of the engine bay has come loose, but this would be easy to reaffix. There are no reported issues with the transmission, suspension, steering or brakes (the rear calipers having been recently replaced). A thoroughly enjoyable 911 to drive.

Summary

There’s a very clear reason for buying a 1980s Porsche 911 in 2023, and that is quite simply that it’s a dream come true. Anyone who grew up in the 1970s, ’80s or ’90s will have yearned for an air-cooled 911 at some point in their youth, that’s an inescapable fact. Of course, we’re under no illusions that this would be a frivolous purchase – whoever buys this car will do so because they most likely know a fair bit about 911s and will be on the lookout for a decent and honest one. And this car really feels like a safe bet. It’s got a great history file, it has all the desirable spec, and impressive originality. A high-quality, totally usable Carrera cabrio, ready to turn heads on the showground, tear up the local B-roads, bumble to the shops, or cruise down to the seaside. If you’ve ever dreamed of owning an ’80s 911, this is the ideal opportunity.
