- V8 conversion
- LPG conversion
- Retrimmed seats
The Appeal
The Land Rover 90 is probably the ultimate expression of do-it-all utility. Pop a V8 in there and you also have something that will not only ford every river and traverse every mountain, but will do so at pace and making one hell of a fine noise to boot.
This example started life as a more standard ‘90’, but has since benefitted from V8 and LPG conversions, alongside some other choice upgrades. With a little love and some cosmetic work, this could be a very usable – not to mention hilarious – way to get around.
The History and Paperwork
- First registered in 1986
- Cat C insurance loss in December 2000
- Converted to V8 / LPG in 2006
- Brand new MOT
- Bought by the vendor in June 2022 and little used
- 115,147 miles indicated
- Complete with numerous invoices for maintenance and servicing
- Younger brother of what would become the Land Rover Defender 90 in the 1990s
The Interior
- Newly retrimmed red and black seats, with an occasional seat for the rear compartment that has not been fitted
- Additional dash-mounted rev counter
- Original style vinyl flooring to the driving compartment
- Modern CD/radio system with speaker mounted in the dash and behind the front seats
- There is some surface corrosion in evidence to the seat frames and floor of the cabin
- Heavily patinated controls and switchgear
- Smaller diameter steering wheel for ease of use
- Some corner damage to the vinyl trim on the rear door
- Battery cover floor panel is missing
- LPG tank fitted behind the rear seats, neatly encased in a metal framework (currently not connected and will require certification)
The Exterior
- Teal green paintwork with contrasting white roof
- Overall the paintwork is in below average condition, with numerous marks, scrapes and scuffs
- There is a sizable dent to the near-side of the roof, but otherwise the panels look fairly straight and undamaged
- The vendor informs us that the front doors will require replacement as the lower sections are corroded and the base frames have gone
- We’re told that the chassis and bulkhead is nice and solid
- A number of enhancements have been made, including: rock sliders, rear step, heavy duty tow hitch, galvanised front turrets, front sump/bash guard, checker plate to the sills and wing tops
- Wheels are black-painted steel items, wrapped in what appear to be quite a new set of matched A/T tyres
- Underneath appears to be straight and solid, with the usual smattering of surface corrosion to the drivetrain components
The Mechanics
- 3.9-litre V8 conversion (fitted in 2006)
- Twin Stromberg carburetors and performance pod filters
- Five-speed manual transmission
- High / low ratio transfer box and diff lock
- Disc handbrake conversion
- Pro Comp 2-inch gas shock absorbers
- Maintenance carried out in 2017 includes: a new starter motor, distributor, water pump, ignition coil, alternator and radiator
- We’re told be the vendor that the car pulls well and has an aggressive engine note, but they advise it will require a ‘fluids and filters’ service
Summary
If you’re after an experience you’ll never forget, a V8 Land Rover is a good place to start. Whether you want out-and-out ability or the kind of drama that leaves an indelible mark on your memory (and the landscape), this intriguing ‘90’ could well be the vehicle for you…
