The Background
Produced from 1978 - 1995 the 928 was developed by Porsche with the intention of replacing the iconic 911. Porsche was yet to enter the luxury touring car market and while they were firmly established as a sports car manufacturer, the future of the company in their opinion relied on grand touring vehicles with conventional engines.
The 928 was born and featured the first V8 engine ever produced by the German giants, and the first and only coupe with a front mounted V8.
It received early commendation for its comfort, power and design and was sold as part of the company's model range for 18 years.
This model is the 928 S2 with an automatic 4 speed box in Guard Red. Included under the bonnet is a revised 4.7L V8 pushing 306hp to the rear wheels plus front and rear spoilers were added to give it a sportier look.
The History
This vehicle has spent 36 years on UK roads and covered 114,000 miles (possibly slightly more) and from the pictures, it's obvious there are a few areas that require attention. First registered in 1985 it has been used exactly how it was intended.
The grand tourer has found itself in various areas of the UK and its current home is in the county of Devon where it is used and loved but the time and attention the car needs is something the owner can no longer provide.

The paperwork
You do get a lot of history with the car, some but not all was photographed. These include part purchases, MOT and service work. The car has been maintained well by owners who wanted to enjoy using the front mounted V8 and pay for what was needed, when it was needed and service it when it was required.
Original handbook containing service records is present and in good order.
The Exterior
There’s no doubt this is a great looking car but as pictured there are a few spots that will need rectifying if a future owner wants to make the body on this 928 perfect. The usual result from life in the UK is starting to take effect, mainly on the lower part of the body and around arches/doors. There’s also a deep scratch on the passenger side and on the sunroof cover, plus a small crack to the black front spoiler.
Putting aside the work required, the 928’s design made big impressions in the 70’s and is will continue to do so for years to come.
The Interior
Overall the interior is in great condition, seats are extremely high quality leather and are not torn. There is some rubbing to the driver’s bolster as you’d expect and the piping has worn there but otherwise good with only a few signs of wear.
There's a few marks on the rear of the back seats from when they've been folding down, but nothing outrageous. Other points to note - A new bluetooth head unit has been installed, front door speakers work fine but only one rear (spare included), the headliner is tidy with only a small kink at the rear.
The electric seat adjustment works fine and the rear boot carpet is in great condition. The original plastic battery cover is also present.

It's typical 70’s, black plastic dash and buttons are present acommodied by a Porsche branded steering wheel and red needle dials. Inside is a really nice place to be.
The Mechanics
The car started without hesitation and the V8’s roar sounded as good as the day it left Stuttgart.
There’s a lot of maintenance work that's been carried out over the years, plenty of stamps in the book and paperwork to come with it.
Everything above and below looks good. Some points the owner has made us aware of are:
- Brake pad wear light is on
- Sensors can be temperamental so the fronts have been deleted, rear ones may need removing and jumping.
- Pads have been checked regularly so not needed. Does not affect the drivability of the car.

- May need new tail light bulbs as the 'tail light' warning light comes on when you turn the lights on. Lights work fine.
- Heater is always hot - a new replacement heater control valve is included with the car.
- Passenger window motor is slow and needs dismantling and a clean up to get it working at normal speed.
- Aircon not working
- Belt was removed by the previous owner.

- Heated seats not known to be working - previous owner said they worked occasionally
- The Radiator is also weeping, suspected from thermostat housing.
- The camblet and transmission fluid also needs replacing soon.
The Appeal
You get a lot of car with the 928, this ‘Risky Business’ 70’s icon ideally needs someone who likes doing the nut and bolt stuff themselves as well as being behind the wheel.
The car was bought in 2020 as a rolling restoration, the current owner has completed some work as you’ll see in the description but their work is now busy and they can no longer dedicate the time to carrying out a full restoration.
This is a great opportunity for someone, it’s a V8, rear wheel drive, German luxury gran tourer, for the price of a 6 year old Vauxhall Corsa!
