Highlights
- In very good condition overall
- Long list of newly replaced parts
- Classically elegant Mercedes styling
The Appeal
Brought in as the replacement for the W113, the R107 Mercedes 280SL carried forward the elegance and appeal of the old Pagoda from the sixties. It doesn’t take long looking at this beautiful car finished in its gorgeous silver paint and complimenting blue cloth roof to appreciate its provenance.
History and Paperwork
- Part service history from independent garages
- Long list of replaced parts in recent years with invoices to prove
- MoT until April 2023
- Sale includes vehicle owner’s manual
- Four owners since new, has been with current owner since 2017
The Interior
- Great blend of leather, fabric and wood
- Very good condition throughout given the car’s age
- Lovely place to be
Two-door convertible Mercedes are, and have always been, created to provide the best driving experiences possible. This particular car is no different thanks to a cabin that has been very well maintained over the course of its life making it a very pleasant place to be.
Adorned in charming blend of blue leather and tartan cloth, the seats meet the brief of such an elegant car. Despite their age, they seem to be in excellent condition bar the odd crease on the driver-side bolster.
The dashboard’s mix of wood accents on a mainly blue surface works just as well as the seats and is beautifully complimented by the perfectly kept carpets.
According to the owner, the clock located within the rev counter doesn’t work but the rest of the interior tech is in perfect working order.
The Exterior
- Beautiful Mercedes SL styling
- Excellent combination of silver paint and a blue cloth roof
- Additional hard top roof included in the sale
Akin to the interior, the outside of the car is in superb condition for its age. The lights are perfectly clear, the tyres have a good amount of tread on them still, the chrome shines in the sunlight, as does the paint. That being said, there are a few blemishes and marks to be found around the bodywork.
Two of the four wheels have some light scuff marks on them, and you’ll notice a small dent in the plastic bumper on the front-left side of the car. Finally, there are some signs of rust. In fact, welding repairs have been made to the front of the floor pan and inside the wheel arch on the driver’s side following an MoT advisory.
Overall though, this 1984 Mercedes 280SL is a stunner out in the open thanks to a splendid specification. The contrasting blue cloth roof lets the silver paintwork shine all while showing off the gorgeous shapes of this highlight in Mercedes styling history.
The Mechanics
- Gearbox and long list of engine components refurbished
- Drives as it should
Sat under the bonnet of this Mercedes 280 SL is the entry-level 2.8 litre inline-six engine. Over the last few years, it has been rejuvenated thanks to many parts being replaced including the head cylinder gasket, fuel pump, timing belt, engine mounts, ignition module to name a few. The owner has kept several invoices to prove the work done.
The work carried out extends to the gearbox which was totally refurbished by a professional.
As for the rest of the car, work was also done to the chassis including replaced track rod ends, shock absorbers, lower suspension arms, brake callipers and hoses. New insulation was also fitted under the bonnet so driving this car should be an entirely silent experience.
Summary
The owner states the car is “very reliable and fun to drive.” The Mercedes 280 SL itself is a staple of stylish top-down cruising, and especially in such a jaw-dropping spec we think this car pushes that to a whole new level. With so much work done, this must be an opportunity to be ceased.
