1983 Land Rover 110 County

Highlights

  • A very early example of a 110
  • Highly original
  • Ready to drive and enjoy

The Appeal

The Land Rover 110 was introduced in 1983 and was made in conjunction with the Series 3 which ended the following year. The new Land Rovers, whilst quite similar aesthetically had some significant changes underneath, the transformative one being a move from leaf springs to coils giving much needed improvement in ride quality whilst still maintaining the off road capability they had become renowned for. Whilst there are subtle changes to the visual design it retained the classic shape and rugged style of its predecessors and the Land Rover 110 saw the same success as its predecessors and later developed into the modern Defender we have today.
This Land Rover 110 is a very early example, coming from the first year of production and in highly original condition it presents a fantastic opportunity to acquire one of these iconic vehicles.

The History and Paperwork

  • V5 present and correct
  • MOT to September
  • An invoice for new rear window channels from 2021
  • An invoice for new halogen h4 headlights with Night Breaker bulbs dated 2021
  • An invoice for an overhaul of the heater box that includes new seals and internal anti-corrosion treatment dated 2019
  • An invoice for a new rear propshaft dated 2020
  • A large selection of invoices and MOT’s dating back to 2005

The Interior

  • Fair condition for its age
  • All three front and all three rear seats all have seatbelts
  • County model with a range of improvements over the base 110
  • Modern stereo
Its interior may be hard wearing and utilitarian by today's standards, but it provides a significant improvement over its Series predecessors. Being a County it benefits from a full length headlining and full cloth seats. The seats are in good condition with little signs of wear and provide a comfortable ride, there are some scuffs and small tears to the rear of the rear seats, but we can forgive this on an almost 40 year old Land Rover!
The dashboard is in good overall condition for a Land Rover of this age and the door cards and trim all present well. A previous owner has used a carbon fibre tape to cover a small section of trim on both doors, but this would be easy to tidy up.
The headline is all present and appears to be well attached and whilst it would benefit from a valet it does present well overall.

The Exterior

  • Original green and white finish
  • All aluminium body panels
  • Classic Land Rover rugged styling
The original Land Rovers may have been designed as utility vehicles, but the rugged styling has become recognisable world wide and this original early 110 County looks fantastic. Whilst there have been revisions over the years you can still see the original design clearly in the modern Defender, when something works this well it doesn’t get changed, not just practical but also good looking it’s a design that has stood the test of time.
Finished in the original green and white complete with the decals, this fine example of a 110 wears its age well. With many other classics signs of wear spoil the appearance, but a Land Rover like this wears them with pride. The paintwork is in good condition for the age and mileage, thanks in part to the all aluminium body and whilst there are some chips and scratches as can be seen in the images it’s still a great looking car.
The big, flat, all business front presents well with a galvanised bumper and the black plastic grille and surround, whilst showing some fading from UV, still looks good. The front light lenses all look good and the bonnet is in good condition, albeit with some stone chipping to the leading edge.
It looks good from the side (which is where you realise just how big a 110 CSW is!) with the original fold out side steps and some wear to the paint around the door handles as to be expected. The gaps look good on both sides and the windows are all in good condition. There are a few small dents visible, but they really don’t affect the overall presentation.
Moving to the rear of the Land Rover and the light lenses all present well, whilst there is a fair amount of wear to the black paint on the lower section of the car.

The Mechanics

  • MOT to September
  • Starts easily
  • The big Rover V8 sounds fantastic
  • All tyres have good tread
  • Engine bay is clean and tidy
  • Engine bay bulkhead presents well
This 110 features the best of the available engines; the 3,528cc Rover V8 and it sounds fantastic. The additional power and torque over the other engines offer a significant advantage especially in the large 110 CSW.
The engine and engine bay presents well overall and the extensive selection of invoices dating back to 2005 demonstrates the care that has been taken with this car. Importantly the engine bay bulkhead presents very well as can be seen in the images as they are often susceptible to corrosion.
The underside appears clean and with an application of proprietary underseal should stay that way for many years.
The upgraded halogen headlights are a welcome improvement over the somewhat dim standard equipment and make driving at night considerably more pleasurable.
The current owner informs us that it drives as it should with the engine pulling well and nice smooth gear changes. They do note however, that it can be a bit sticky to select reverse.

Summary

The 110 CSW is everything you could want in a Land Rover; a great V8 engine, a bulletproof build, iconic rugged styling, a spacious interior and the ability to go anywhere. Ready to drive and enjoy this early 110 CSW is still as useful, if somewhat more collectible, today as it was when it first rolled out of the factory.
