1981 Triumph Spitfire 1500

HIGHLIGHTS

  • 20,369 mileage believed genuine
  • Extensive history
  • Original condition
  • One of the very last Spitfires
  • Eligible for historic car classification

THE APPEAL

Introduced in 1974, the Triumph Spitfire 1500 was a modernised version of the classic two-seater, with a new rear end and modified nose to bring the styling up-to-date, as well as a new larger engine to meet stringent new emissions legislation in the USA.
The engine is the same as that in the Dolomite saloon and is a straightforward and simple unit to maintain, which sits well with the Spitfire’s non-nonsense approach to fun-filled motoring.
This one is remarkable. Its mileage of just over 20,000 is believed genuine, backed up by an MOT history that shows minimal mileage each year for half of its life, and a box of history before that.  It’s in very good original condition.

THE HISTORY AND PAPERWORK

  • UK V5C
  • Tax and MOT exempt
  • Box of history and invoices (note to consignor/curator – the vendor did not have photos but assures us the file is substantial, I have asked her to forward photos. She claims it verifies the car’s mileage)
  • MOT valid until June 2023 despite being exempt
  • Only 1,080 miles covered in past 15 years
Eligible for historic car classification, which will make it MOT and ULEZ exempt.

THE INTERIOR

  • Completely original
  • Vinyl and check beige cloth
  • Original push-button radio
  • Tonneau cover

Trimmed in beige vinyl with matching check inserts, the cabin of the car is a wonderful contrast to its so of-its-era exterior. It’s wonderful original, right down to the illuminated ‘Fasten Belts’ warning that flashes up when you switch on the ignition.
The wooden dash is in good order, as are the door cards and carpets, while it even still has its original British Leyland push-button radio.
A smart beige tonneau cover keeps things neat for when the roof is lowered. It’s in great condition with only minimal wear to the seat facings.

THE EXTERIOR

  • Excellent order
  • Original Russet Brown paint
  • Very good outriggers and chassis condition
  • Original ‘Spitfire 1500’ decals
  • Additional wing-mirror that will come with the car upon sale

This is a great looking Spitfire finished in a colour scheme that evokes the late 1970s and early 1980s – Russet Brown. It really suits the Spitfire’s curvy lines and the body is said to be pretty much original, which appears to be correct when you look at the “Spitfire 1500” decals on the bonnet and boot lid.
There are no major problems at all – a couple of minor marks and stone chips to the paint but nothing of note, and a couple of very small marks on the rims of the steel sports wheels, while the chrome is in good condition with only minimal pitting. The bonnet fit is excellent, which any aficionado will tell you is rare for a Spitfire!
Underneath, the chassis has been undersealed and appears sound, while the vulnerable front outriggers look very good. There is evidence of some minor welding repairs to the lower corners of the front bulkhead but carried out to a good and very neat standard.
The canvas roof is in good order, while a period chrome luggage rack is a nice period addition.

THE MECHANICS

  • 1,493cc in-line four
  • Four-speed manual
  • Drives well
  • Maintained throughout its life

The 1,493cc Standard-Triumph engine is a proven unit that lasts well providing it has been well-maintained, and this one has been.
It runs well and doesn’t overheat, while the vendor reports that it drives very well indeed with no known problems. Although MOT-exempt, the vendor had the car MOT’d in June this year for peace of mind and it passed with no advisories.

SUMMARY

If you want a fun, usable and easy-to-own classic sports car then this tax and MOT-exempt Spitty is a wonderful choice. Finished in a glorious period colour scheme, it looks great and is said to be in rude mechanical health. A charming, original and low-mileage car that deserves to be loved.
