The Appeal
The Datsun 1400 Pickup was a South African specific model produced locally by Rosslyn Motor Assemblers which went on to become Nissan South Africa. This local production arrangement was a convenient way to overcome import restricts placed on vehicles imported directly from Japan. The Datsun 1400 became a benchmark model in South Africa for this light-utility sector. So successful was it that it was nicknamed “the Champion of Africa.”
This example is in a highly original condition but has further benefitted from a later, professional respray. This little pickup spent its whole life in the arid South African climate and its condition has clearly benefitted from that history. This pickup is reported to be a great little runner and will provide the new owner with an economical and rarely seen classic.

Summary
The Datsun 1400 was a South Africa specific model with other markets only getting a 1,200cc equivalent. For this reason, these charming little pickups are a very rare sight on UK roads. Despite its diminutive stature the payload of the pickup is in excess of 500 kgs, making it more than just a show vehicle should the owner require it.
This example looks amazing for its age. The grey paintwork is in a fine overall condition. The South African climate also seems to have played its part in the condition of the bodywork and underside. With a proven 1,400cc petrol engine under the bonnet this should prove an economical and cheap to run and maintain. It’s a winning combination, for sure, and will no doubt appeal to a range of autophiles.
