The Appeal

As the first series of vehicles from Mercedes to be officially classed as the “S-Class”, the W116 Mercedes is one of the more recognizable classic German cars, even to this day, With total production numbers just shy of half a million units, the W116 was undoubtedly a popular vehicle, partly in as a result of its comfort, build quality, and revolutionary safety features such as ABS.

The 450 SEL models were amongst the most popular options from the W116 lineup, even receiving the prestigious title of “European Car of the Year” in 1974. This example showcases the 4.5L V8, which is known for aiding a comfortable, smooth driving experience. Tidy original examples such as this are seldom seen on the road, with the majority of surviving vehicles in need of extensive restoration due to their age. If you’re looking for one of the classiest saloons ever produced, this 450 SEL ticks that box every time.

The History and Paperwork

  • 5 former keepers
  • 3 keys in total
  • Garage stored and well cared for
  • V5C document present
  • Stamped Service booklet
  • Mercedes-Benz handbooks present
This now 43-year-old Mercedes boasts just 5 former keepers and now shows 97k on the odometer. As the stamps within the service booklet reflect, this mileage is indeed believed to be genuine, making this a rather low mileage example for its age. In its early years, the vehicle would have no doubt seen somewhat regular use but has spent recent years and its time with the current keeper venturing out only a handful of times on dry days.
Now, the vehicle is ready to be enjoyed by a lucky new owner, and will no doubt make a superb addition to a classic collection, or simply a classy weekend toy to enjoy.

The Interior

  • Beige velour inteiror
  • Mostly original
  • Great condition for its age
  • Incredibly comfortable
The interior of this 450 SEL is in excellent condition for its age, still showing a nearly completely original cabin, with the clear exception of the head unit. The Beige interior has held up rather well over the years, showing only minor signs of age.
Perhaps most notable are marks on both front seats, which a professional detail would greatly alleviate. The rear seats, on the other hand, appear to have hardly been used throughout the vehicle’s life, and now show very few signs of use altogether. As is the case with many other examples, the rear parcel shelf has suffered from the sun’s rays over the years, but hardly detracts from the overall appearance.
In the boot, you’ll find the matching spare, toolkit, warning triangle, and tidy carpeting throughout. You’ll also notice an extra radio, should the new owner wish to revert to a slightly more period correct version, and a CD changer.
Overall, the interior of this Benz is in excellent condition, especially for its age. It clearly benefits from years of care, and could quite easily be restored to near its former glory. You certainly won’t be disappointed with the comfort provided either, especially on long-distance trips.

The Exterior

  • Grey paintwork
  • Great condition
  • Refurbished alloy wheels
  • Classy W116 styling
This 450 SEL shows off its grey paintwork with pride, boasting a much better finish than other examples of the same age. As is to be expected with a car this old, there are of course minor defects to note around the interior.
Defects include a rust spot above the rear windscreen, minor rust near the sunroof, minor signs of corrosion noticeable only upon very close inspection, and slight hazing & marks to the front right of the bonnet. For the age of the vehicle, these are certainly minor visual items that can be easily remedied by either a good polish, minor touchups, or professional attention.
The car sits on a set of freshly refurbished wheels, which look absolutely superb in their new finish. The wheels are wrapped in a fresh set of Nexen tyres with plenty of tread for the new owner to enjoy out on the road.

The Mechanics

  • Drives brilliantly
  • Provides a very smooth and comfortable experience
  • 4.5L V8
  • Automatic transmission
  • Regularly serviced over the years
  • Low mileage example
  • 2 new brake calipers
Buyers will be pleased to know that this Mercedes drives beautifully, happily delivering plenty of torquey V8 power, and smooth gear changes. The only known fault with the vehicle can be found with the starter motor, which can be rather intermittent here and there, but never truly fails to start.
As the service booklet reflects, the car has been treated to regular servicing, with the most recent of which occurring less than around 2000 miles ago. Although the car hasn’t needed too much in recent years, the current owner has treated the car to a pair of new brake calipers, which now perform exactly as intended.
This is undoubtedly one of the few examples on the market that doesn’t struggle with an assortment of age-related issues or electrical problems. If you’re looking for a useable, yet beautiful weekend toy that will happily perform on command, this is the car for you.

Summary

The 450 SEL is one of Mercedes-Benz’s classiest creations, embodying everything we love about classic German saloons with its whopping V8 and plush interior. This particular example does the name proudly, showing off an impressive exterior finish, well-cared for interior, and great service record. If you’re looking for a classic Mercedes to enjoy the open road with, this 450 SEL certainly won’t disappoint.
