The Appeal

The VW Type 2 T2 is legendary in the world of classic camper vans. Fitted with a beautifully retro Westfalia interior, this camper is ready to go on any adventure you care to mention.

The current owner has enjoyed this van for some time now and it is now ready for someone else to enjoy the thrills of classic camping.

The History and Paperwork

  • Built in 1978, this Type 2 stayed within West Germany for the majority of its early life
  • The car was imported into the UK in 2003, when it was then acquired by the current owners
  • After enjoying the van for two years they realised it was time to give it a new lease of life
  • In 2005 a reconditioned engine was installed along with a new clutch
  • Since the transplant, this van has covered around 30,000 miles, meaning there should be plenty of life left in it yet
  • The current owner has stated that the vehicle has a full service history, which has been carried out by independent specialists
  • The V5 is present and correct
  • Cared for by its current owners for two decades – and said to have been loved like a member of the family
  • Historic vehicle - so it's MOT and tax exempt

The Interior

  • Original Westfalia set-up
  • Pop-up top
  • Lots of storage
As a Westfalia camper, the interior condition is vitally important so that you can just get in and explore the world to your heart's content. This interior appears to be presented in fairly original condition which is lovely to see.
Starting at the front we have the functional yet comfortable and roomy cabin that defines all T2 vans. The black plastic dashboard is crack free, which is rare to find. Looking at the rest of the plastic elements, such as the twin-spoke steering wheel, they are presented very well and are in good condition.
The seats are trimmed with a very fetching, original Westfalia green plaid material. They are in reasonable condition but wearing a nice level of patination, and we can see that they have been used and enjoyed over the past 40+ years. The passenger side seat appears to be in better condition, with no signs of staining or unwanted marks. The driver’s seat does show some signs of its age, and has a small rip on the side bolster, but this is somewhat expected for a vehicle of this age that is unrestored and has been loved as much as this one has.

The original carpets are all present and in good condition, and the van is sold with protective mats for all carpeted areas and the back section.
A similar design is carried into the rear with matching green plaid upholstery, coordinated wrap-around curtains and period wood veneer. With the rear bench seat in travelling mode it has two proper seatbelts fitted, to help keep your rear seat passengers nice and safe. When you arrive at your camping location, the ‘rock and roll’ bed pulls out with enough room to comfortably sleep two people.
If you are looking to go camping with this, then you’ll be happy to see the hob set up that this van has. The usual twin burner set-up sits just behind the passenger seat and is the more accessible unit. However, there is another, larger hob unit stowed away neatly in one of the cupboards. This unit folds down and provides as many hobs as a normal kitchen.
There are a number of further additions to this interior that help to make it easy to live with. The fold-out table sits nicely over the extra seating area in the rear and can then swing around to provide a nice preparation or work area. There are a lot of cupboards and storage cubbies dotted throughout the living area. The original fridge is still fitted, but the current owner has said that this is currently non-functioning.
One of the most important features in the interior of this specific Westfalia is the pop-up roof section. Giving you more headroom in the middle of the van, it also provides more airflow and makes it easier to stand when cooking.

The Exterior

  • Distinctive green paintwork
  • External spare wheel with cover
  • Easy to access electrical hook up
The exterior of a Type 2 T2 is instantly recognisable thanks to its smiling front end, rolling side door, and pop-up roof section. Finished in a striking lime green, this camper is a real head-turner.
Externally it is in good condition – there are a few areas of the bodywork that a new owner may wish to get sorted, predominantly around the jacking points. These have been highlighted in the pictures. There may be some more obvious areas of corrosion on the body, but the VW specialist that the current owners use has said that the underside is solid.
This van truly maintains its lovable original character, and the trim elements are all present and correct. The white front bumper complements the paint well, while the spare wheel cover is embellished with a chequer pattern.

The Mechanics

  • Reconditioned engine fitted
  • New clutch 30,000 miles ago
  • Biggest 2.0l engine fitted
When new, the T2 had the choice of five engines, ranging from the smallest 1.6-litre up to the largest and more powerful 2.0-litre. This T2 has the largest engine fitted which should certainly make it nice and peppy when you’re out and about.
Upon its import into the UK in 2003 it was still fitted with the original engine, but in 2005 the current owners decided to fit a reconditioned 2.0-litre. At this point, they also fitted a new clutch. Since then, it has covered around 30,000 so there should be lots of life left in the vehicle's drivetrain.
