Highlights
- Air ride suspension
- Rare crew cab pickup specification
- Twin carburettor conversion
The Appeal
Type 2 crew cabs are an unusual sight in the UK and this customised right-hand drive example has been restored to a high standard.
Customising Volkswagens has played a prominent part in global car culture since the mid-1960s and this Type 2 embodies the spirit of those pioneering VW hot-rodders. Fitted with air ride suspension, this crew cab has a purposeful stance and the aftermarket exhaust system leaves no doubt that this Volkswagen is far from standard.
The History and Paperwork
- Owned by the vendor for ten years
- Previously owned and rebuilt by Danbury VW Conversions Ltd
- Part specialist service history
- 9 owners from new
- UK supplied
The Interior
- Leather seats
- Wilton carpeting
- Custom steering wheel
- Painted dash
- Mohair sunroof
Sold as a commercial vehicle, the Type 2 crew cab had a very spartan interior. However, during the restoration process, this example has been treated to leather seats with silver piping and Bentley diamond stitching. The seats are very smart and the vendor doesn’t report any signs of damage or heavy wear.
The dashboard and door shuts are painted in silver to match the top half of the exterior paintwork. A modern stereo is now fitted along with a full complement of speaker equipment. A mohair sunroof is a nice addition and the vendor informs us that it operates correctly. The vendor also tells us that the headlining is clean and well supported.
Wilton carpets are fitted throughout and they remain in good, usable condition. Further custom features include a wood-rimmed steering wheel, complete with Wolfsburg crest and an aluminium gear knob.
The Exterior
- Merian Brown / Reflex Silver
- Genuine 911 Fuchs alloys
- Full custom mohair tonneau
- Wooden bed lining
Finished in Volkswagen colours Merian Brown (la8a) and Reflex Silver (la7w), this Type 2 really stands out from the crowd. The vendor informs us that it sits on genuine Porsche Fuchs alloys and they complement the silver roof very well. The bodywork is straight and well painted and the underside appears to be in really smart condition, with no corrosion visible on any of the chassis components. Owing to its age, it is likely that this truck will have had some fabrication work completed in the past. However, any welding has clearly been completed to a very high standard.
The pickup bed has been lined in hardwood which really suits the custom feel of this truck. Featuring drop sides, this is a large and versatile load bay. Although, from its condition, it is clear that since the restoration this Type 2 has taken on lighter duties than it was built to deal with. There is also a mohair tonneau cover supplied with the vehicle.
The vendor informs us that the tyres are in good condition with ample tread remaining.
The Mechanics
- 1600cc twin-carb flat-four
- Aftermarket exhaust system
- Smart engine compartment
The vendor informs us that this Volkswagen drives really well; running, accelerating, changing gear and braking exactly as it should. Thanks to a large custom exhaust, a throaty roar emanates from the rear of this Type 2.
Now benefitting from a twin carburettor conversion, the 1600cc VW unit provides good performance for a vehicle of this size and does not smoke or make any untoward noises. The vendor does inform us that there is a small oil leak from the sump, but this appears to be relatively superficial. The engine compartment itself has been finished in body colour and is very clean and tidy.
The air suspension functions well and gives this truck a variety of ride height options. The added negative camber on the rear wheels makes this example look particularly purposeful.
Summary
Presented in very good overall mechanical and cosmetic condition, this custom VW is one of the smartest around and is ready to be enjoyed by its next owner. With so few crew cabs remaining in the UK, this is a fantastic opportunity to acquire a truly unique custom Volkswagen.
