Highlights
- Now fitted with the 2.0-litre version of Alfa Romeo’s legendary twin-cam engine
- The fabric roof was replaced quite recently
- Well presented inside and out, with a partially retrimmed interior and good bodywork
The Appeal
Immortalised by a young Dustin Hoffman in the 1967 film, The Graduate, the Alfa Romeo Spider has become something of a cult classic. Based upon the long lived 105 series platform, the Spider spanned four generations between 1966 and 1994.
Here we have a charming ‘Coda Tronca’ Series II that has reportedly had just three owners from new. Stringent tax regulations meant smaller engined variants were popular in the Italian market although this Spider has since been upgraded from a 1600 to a 2000cc twin-cam.
Recently awakened from a period of hibernation, this Alfa runs and drives but will need a little work to bring it back to its best. Having been carefully dry stored for much of its life, it has really smart bodywork with no signs of the corrosion that normally takes hold on old Alfas. If you’re looking for a car to use and improve over time, this delightful little Italian roadster would be a fabulous candidate.
The History and Paperwork
- Three previous owners
- Stored indoors when not in use, apparently all of its life
- The last owner had the car for around ten years
- Has stood for some time until recently being revived
- Running and driving, although in need of a thorough service
- Used sparingly in the summer months during the last owner’s tenure
- The interior received some work and a new soft top was fitted around two years ago
- The bodywork was restored around ten years ago
- Italian Revisione ran out in June 2022, although the vendor informs us that another shall be attained before the car goes to its next owner
- Registration / ownership documents present
The Interior
- Black vinyl upholstery in very good overall condition
- The seats were professionally retrimmed around two years ago
- Those splendid Jaeger instruments present well and we’re informed they function correctly
- The Hellebore steering wheel remains in very good condition
- No cracking or damage to the dashboard that we could see
- Some signs of age to the black rubber matting which may well be original
- The gear knob has been repainted in black
- The cigarette lighter is missing
- It appears a blanking plate has been fitted where the heater controls once were
- No radio is, or likely has ever been fitted
- Some patination to the door cards but they remain very serviceable
- The vendor informs us that some of the controls are inoperative
- The rubber boot liner remains in place and underneath the jack and spare wheel remain in place
The Exterior
- Rosso Alfa (red) paintwork
- Incredibly pretty Pininfarina styling
- The bodywork was restored around ten years ago
- Smart paintwork with a few blemishes and touch ins
- The bodywork appears really straight and there are no obvious signs of corrosion
- The underside has also been repainted in red
- All of the brightwork and glass presents well
- Retains its ‘1600’ badge on the rear, making it something of a sleeper
- New soft top roof fitted around two years ago which continues to function well
- The tyres will soon require replacement
- Steel wheels with chrome centre embellishments
The Mechanics
- 2.0-litre twin-cam engine fitted in place of the original 1.6-litre unit
- Solex carburettors
- Clean and tidy under the bonnet
- The vendor advises that a thorough service is required
- Runs well and drives
- There are a few noises when driving and the vendor suggests the suspension will need refreshing along with some of the perishable components
- Second gear synchromesh can be a little patchy as is not uncommon with Alfa Romeos of this vintage
Summary
We think this achingly beautiful Alfa Romeo would make a great winter project. With very sound bodywork, a good interior and an uprated engine, it will make a fabulous little car without too much work.
