1975 Volkswagen 1303 Super Beetle

Highlights

  • One previous owner from new
  • Recent specialist servicing
  • Desirable 1303 Super Beetle

The Appeal

Proof positive that you can still get into classic motoring at an affordable cost is this 1975 ‘Super Beetle’, so called for its slightly scaled up size and refinements to the front suspension among the changes over the standard car. It looks lovely from a distance and shows a few areas of bubbling and corrosion closer up but is described by its current owner as reliable and could form the basis of a rolling restoration or usable classic.
With only two owners from new and reportedly garaged for most of its life, it’s been regularly serviced at a VW specialist since 2018 when it was acquired by the current owner. So here’s your opportunity to get into classic Beetle ownership with options to enjoy it as is, improve over time, or dive straight in for a spot of light restoration. The History and Paperwork

  • Registered new 18 January 1975
  • Kept by the first owner to 2018
  • Garaged most of its life
  • Odometer not working for some of the time so mileage unknown
  • Regularly serviced by VW specialist in current ownership
  • Folder of invoices and old MOTs
  • Owner’s manuals
  • MOT exempt
  • V5 present in owner’s name

The Interior

  • Blue cloth upholstery
  • Headlining clean and taut
  • Everything working as it should
Compared with the interior of a modern car, the cabin of a Beetle may seem a little spartan but these were simpler times and there’s pretty much all that you really need in here. The seats, trimmed in blue cloth, are showing a bit of wear, mostly in the form of some stretching but with no major rips or holes.
The carpet is well preserved and the headlining is in great condition, being clean and well-secured to the roof. Everything on the dashboard is said to function as intended. In the front boot, there’s significantly more space than you’ll find in a standard Beetle and a full size spare tucked under the floor, though sadly no tool kit. In all, the interior is well preserved and, although with room for some improvements, very usable.

The Exterior

  • Presents generally well
  • Some areas of bubbling/ corrosion
  • Good wheels and tyres
Finished in pale blue metallic, the car scrubs up well and looks good in the sunlight. Closer inspection reveals some bubbling to the paint and areas of corrosion, which are all detailed in the accompanying photographs. Similarly, the chrome work is in generally good order but shows some pitting and corrosion, especially to the tops of the bumpers.
The wheels are all in good condition and have tyres with good tread all round. Underneath, the seller reports no damage and that it’s in good condition, though there is some surface corrosion visible in the photographs. Overall, the exterior has a few areas that would benefit from some attention but it does look to be solid and presentable.

The Mechanics

  • 1285cc engine
  • Four speed manual gearbox
  • Runs well
The engine bay appears original, if with signs of ongoing maintenance. Since 2018, the owner describes that it has been regularly serviced at a VW specialist on a ‘no expense spared’ basis. There are said to be no leaks from the engine and no smoke from the exhaust. On the road, the seller reports that the car drives exactly as it should with a smooth gear change and the characteristic exhaust sounding good.

Summary

A presentable Super Beetle which is very usable and offers some opportunities for improvement.
