1975 Porsche 911 3.2 Targa

Highlights

  • Striking colour scheme and period details
  • Very presentable interior
  • Used sparingly for a number of years, making it an excellent recommissioning project
  • 3.2-litre engine
  • Manual transmission

The Appeal

Picture the scene, it’s 1975, you’ve just stepped out of your new 911 Targa. Bowie’s Young Americans is blaring from the stereo and you’re wearing flares that are wider than the wheel arches…
Sadly, we’ve yet to offer a time machine, but we can give you the opportunity to acquire this Porsche.
Resplendent in a striking shade of ‘Fuscia’, which looks a lot like Porsche’s Rubystone Red to us, this 911 is a fabulous ‘70s throwback and looks to be a very handsome example. It’s been used very sparingly in recent years and the vendor has worked out that it’s taken about two decades to cover a mere thousand miles.
Now likely in need of some recommissioning, this Porsche represents an excellent opportunity to put an automotive icon back on the road.

The History and Paperwork

  • Acquired by the previous owner in 2003
  • The vendor calculates that it has covered just 11,000 miles since 1989 and only about 1,000 in the past 20 years
  • Professionally restored in 1996 and fitted with a rebuilt Carrera 3.2-litre engine
  • Last MOT tested in June 2020, now exempt
  • Originally a yellow car that underwent a colour change some years ago
  • Accompanied by a history file, with old MOT certificates, invoices and book pack

The Interior

  • Very presentable
  • Upholstered in vinyl, with cloth inserts
  • Period stereo cassette player
We love the frankly brutalistic nature of classic 911 interiors. They’re unashamedly functional, with chunky switchgear, instruments that are easy to read and hard wearing materials. From behind the wheel, you get the impression that it’ll last forever, and there’s absolutely nothing to distract you from the pure, unadulterated joy of driving.
True to form, this 911s interior has weathered the passage of time very nicely, with little to note beyond the gentle patina of use. The seats exhibit very little wear and, in spite of this being a sports car, there’s the added benefit of rear seating too.
The dashboard still looks good after all these years, we enjoy the period correct stereo. The instrumentation presents well, as does the aforementioned switchgear. Throughout the cabin, the carpeting looks to be in good order, with not too much in the way of wear.
Overall, a very presentable interior.

The Exterior

  • Fuschia / Rubystone Red paintwork
  • An older respray holding up well
  • Attractive Fuchs alloys
  • ‘Whale tail’, Targa roof and front spoiler
Few cars are such an assault upon the senses as this Targa. The colour, the ‘whale tail’, the two-tone Fuchs alloy wheels - it really does have it all.
The vendor points out that the paintwork has a few imperfections, with some chips, a few small runs and some general wear. It was painted some time ago, having previously been yellow, so it’s hardly surprising that it has picked up the odd mark or two. Overall, it still looks really good and we’re glad someone elected to paint it this magnificent colour.
The bodywork looks to be very straight, with no obvious signs of any accident damage. Were informed that it has been stored in a dry environment for a number of years, which would appear to have paid dividends. The plastic / rubber components all look to be in good shape with some slight fading and the Carrera vinyls down the sides look in good condition.
With black centres, the Fuchs alloys look fabulous, wearing some light patina but no indication of kerbing or pothole damage. The Targa roof panel appears in reasonably good condition.

The Mechanics

  • We’re informed that a rebuilt 3.2-litre flat-six was fitted in 1996
  • Five-speed manual gearbox
  • The vendor recommends thorough inspection and commissioning before use, although the car starts, drives and stops.
  • Substantial invoice from Porsche Specialist "Northway" to Oselli LTD including Flywheel, Ring Gear, Clutch, Synchros, Oil Line Feeds, etc
With a freshly rebuilt engine apparently fitted relatively few miles ago, some care and attention should bring it back to very good mechanical order. The vendor informs us that it starts, runs and drives, but is being auctioned as requiring a good going over before it is used
With a manual gearbox, these are engaging cars to drive and we’d love to get behind the wheel once this Porsche is ready to hit the road once more.

Summary

With great potential and an unforgettable appearance, don’t miss the opportunity to acquire this lovely 911 Targa.
The next owner will be able to enjoy the process of returning it to rude health, and we can’t wait to see it around when it’s finished.
