The Appeal
This BMW 2002 is a striking car, finished in Golf Yellow with minilite wheels, it looks fantastic and really stands out. Extensively restored in the early 2000’s by the father of the current owner who had the car until 2021, it has covered only around 10,000 miles since and as such is in fantastic condition inside and out.
The 2002 was initially created after two BMW employees both modified their 1602 by fitting a 2l engine, and realising the potential of the 1602 chassis paired with the more powerful 2l engine the idea of the 2002 was born. With the significant performance increase provided by the larger engine the car was a success and received many favourable reviews alongside healthy sales.
The 2002 is everything a classic BMW should be; fun to drive, great looks and very stylish. This 2002 Lux stands out thanks to the long single ownership and the extensive restoration that was carried out making this a very fine example of the classic BMW.
The History and Paperwork
- One owner from 1991 to 2021 (it has now passed to the owners son)
- Extensive MOT history documenting the low mileage since restoration
- A printed book from Prince Rock Garages, that undertook the restoration, detailing all of the work completed along with invoice numbers that correspond with the invoices supplied
- A comprehensive selection of invoices both for the work carried out during the restoration as well as subsequent servicing and consumables
- Registered as a historic vehicle
- Original owners handbook
The Interior
- Retrimmed
- Very good condition throughout
- Some scratches to the passenger side door handle
Having covered only a small mileage since the restoration, which included a full retrim of the seats, along with new carpets and headlining, the interior presents very well. The interior of the car is very much of its time with distinctive 70’s styling that looks as good today as when it was made. The seats are soft and comfortable, showing almost no signs of wear. The carpets and headlining are also in a similar condition, whilst the dashboard and trim all also present very well.
The Exterior
- Resprayed in Golf Yellow
- Minilite wheels all in very good condition
- Bumpers, brightwork and trim all in very good condition
- One small area of bubbling on the wheel arch and one small flaked area that has been touched up
- Comes with a cover in good condition
The classic BMW shape of the 02 series looks particularly good when combined with the Golf Yellow paintwork and minilite wheels as is done here. With excellent brightwork and trim this car looks fantastic from every angle, ready to show or enjoy on the open road, it’s a car that will attract attention wherever it goes.
As with the interior the exterior received much attention during the restoration, as well as the respray and minilite wheels the roof was repaired and new gutters were fitted. In excellent overall condition it’s a fine looking example of the much loved 2002.
The Mechanics
- Full engine rebuild undertaken as part of the restoration
- 5-speed gearbox fitted
- Engine bay and undersides are clean and present very well
- Starts easily, idles smoothly and runs well
- The owner reports that it drives as it should, asides from the brakes feeling a little vague
As well as all of the various parts being replaced during the restoration and having the undersides sealed, the engine benefitted from a complete rebuild with new parts as necessary. Alongside this a 5-speed gearbox and suitable clutch with shortened propshaft was fitted offering a significant improvement over the original 4-speed box configuration.
Summary
This 2002 is a fantastic opportunity for anyone looking for a classic BMW in great condition that’s ready to enjoy. Fully restored it presents excellently and in the same ownership for 30 years with extremely well documented history during this time it presents a great opportunity to acquire one of these classic BMWs.
