1974 Volkswagen T2 Bay Window Camper

Highlights

  • Desirable Devon conversion with elevating roof and walkthrough bulkhead
  • Restored in 2013 by Volkswagen Type 2 specialist Rusty Kampers
  • Refitted and rewired in 2020

The Appeal

Few vehicles in the history of motorised transportation are as iconic as the Type 2 Volkswagen and for many, the sight of a red and cream Bay Window such as this evokes fond memories of past holidays and road trips.
Refitted in 2020, this 1974 example benefits from an updated interior, making this a usable camper van which is ready to be enjoyed.

The History and Paperwork

  • Restored in 2013 by Rusty Kampers
  • Refitted and rewired in 2020
  • Formerly Orient Blue and Pastel White
  • Historic road tax and MOT status
  • Original owner’s manuals present
  • 78,000 miles from new

The Interior

  • Retrimmed and refitted
  • Mains electric hook-up
  • Leisure battery with power inverter
  • Walkthrough bulkhead
Having been refitted with a more contemporary replacement interior in 2020, the inside of this camper van is in very good order.

The seats have been retrimmed in red and cream vinyl to match the exterior colour scheme. The rear seating arrangement folds down into quite a large bed space and the vendor informs us that everything functions correctly.
Being fairly new, the kitchen cabinets appear to be in very good condition and have clearly been fitted well. The floor is now covered with a wood-effect lino that complements the veneer on the cabinetry.
Up front, everything appears to be in fine shape, with common areas of corrosion such as the cab corners appearing to be quite solid, displaying only a little surface rust. The carpeting is also very serviceable, as is the headlining.

The painted dashboard is very smart and now houses a modern stereo / navigation unit as well as the original gauge cluster and glove box.
Underneath the dash, we can see evidence of the 2020 rewire, making use of a more modern fuse board and electrical connectors. For camping, the vendor informs us that this type 2 has mains hook-up and an inverter connected to the leisure battery.
There is also a jack with the vehicle which the vendor reports is in good working order.

The Exterior

  • Optional vented windows
  • Devon elevating roof
  • Now painted red and cream
The documentation that accompanies this camper van tells us that it was previously painted in Orient Blue and Pastel White. Now finished in red and cream, this van’s bodywork would appear to be in very good condition for its age.
There are some signs of corrosion around the sills, particularly in the lower bulkhead behind the driver’s door where a small hole has developed.

As is quite typical of these Volkswagens, the paint is blowing in a few places around the vehicle with some corrosion evident along the horizontal seam running parallel to the front bumper. The bumpers themselves appear to be in good, solid order.

Overall, this remains a very solid example of what is now almost a fifty year-old van. As part of the restoration work, the rear jacking points and floor pans have had some welding work carried out and we can see that the condition of the van’s underside is quite sound.
As an original Devon conversion, this Type 2 is equipped with an elevating roof, which is quite clean and works as it should. This 1974 example also has the vented rear windows, which was an optional extra at the time. The vendor also informs us that the van is supplied with solar panels and an awning.
This Type 2 sits on the correct Volkswagen wheels, which all appear to be in good shape. The vendor informs us that the tyres have ample tread remaining, including the rear mounted spare which is attached using a folding bracket.

The Mechanics

  • 1,641cc engine replaced
  • Gearbox refurbished
Mechanically, this Volkswagen is very sound, the vendor informing us that it runs, drives, changes gear and stops exactly as it should.
The vendor also reports that the 1.6-litre air-cooled engine has been replaced at some point in the past and the gearbox has been rebuilt.

Summary

With an updated interior, previously restored bodywork and rebuilt mechanicals, this Type 2 is ready to be enjoyed as is, or alternatively would be a worthy candidate to make really smart indeed.
Bay Window Volkswagens are becoming increasingly sought after and this Devon conversion is a versatile camper van that we’re sure will impress Volkswagen enthusiasts the world over.
