THE APPEAL
Triumph unveiled the new TR6 sports car in 1968, succeeding the out going and well received TR4/5. Whilst the later was style by Michelotti, the more muscular shape of the TR6 was crafted by Karmann of Germany. It was a clever styling exercise by Triumph as on the outside it looked like a brand new car. However underneath were the tried and trusted mechanicals that had made the TR4 and the TR5 a big success. The TR6 on sale with Car and Classics is a 1974 example that has benefited from a recent refresh and is fitted with the powerful 2.5 litre fuel injected engine.
THE HISTORY AND PAPERWORK
- V5C on file
- Numerous expired MOT certificates
- Good history file with maintenance records dating back to the 1980s
- Acquired by the current owner in 2020 as a lockdown project and restored over that period
- A selection of invoices are on file which cover the recent restoration
- It is believed the car was previously restored in the 1990s and there are a number of old photographs on file detailing the works carried out
THE INTERIOR
- New Cream Leather Seat covers with red pipping which compliments the exterior colour scheme very well
- A new tan carpet set has been fitted which adds to the fresh interior
- The owner informs us that the dashboard was removed and restored and is in nice condition
- The three spoke TR6 steering wheel is also in nice shape
- The current owner confirms that all the gauges work as they should with much of the wiring gone through during the restoration
THE EXTERIOR
- The TR6 is finished in white with a attractive red pinstripe which is a nice addition and ties in well with the red pipping on the seats
- The bodywork presents very well with good shut lines and panel gaps
- There are some very minor marks in the paint which are shown in the photos but these do not detract from what is a very presentable TR6. It does look fantastic in white.
- New door rubbers with fitted during the restoration
- The cars chrome work is in very nice shape with both bumpers rechromed during the restoration
- The TR6 sits on a set of Cobra Slots alloys which really enhance the muscular look. The rims are in decent shape and would benefit from some polishing to bring them up to their best. The spare is matching as well.
- The convertible hood is in overall good shape but it does have 2 small holes on opposite sides which are shown in the photos. The owner has patched the holes but these haven’t held. They state that they had planned to replace the hood with a new red one, but have decided to leave the colour choice to the new owner.
- A white hardtop comes with the TR6 and it was fitted with a sunroof at some point in the past. It will require new fitting pins and seals before being installed on the car. There is a small tear to the headliner but this could be repaired.
THE MECHANICS
- 2.5 litre straight six engine with fuel injection
- 4 Speed Manual Gearbox with Overdrive
- 53,259 recorded miles with the MOT records on had suggesting this could well be genuine
- The current owner has gone through the mechanicals, replacing and renewing parts where needed many of which are documented in the history file
- The fuel injection system was overhauled with a new metering unit and injectors fitted, which is detailed in the history file
- The current owner confirms the car starts and drives very nicely with the fantastic engine note that makes the TR6 highly sought after. The stainless steel exhaust system further enhances the straight six sound.
- A new engine cooling fan has been installed and this is backed up by an Kenlow electric fan
SUMMARY
The Triumph TR6 has long been the go to sports car for classic car fans wanting a powerful and practical convertible. With that lusty 150BHP straight six engine up front and a decent sized boot in the back, the TR6 makes for a fantastic practical classic, one that sounds as good as it looks. This fuel injected example is looking very fresh after its lockdown restoration and we have to say it is refreshing to see one in white. It is a colour that really suits the muscular Karmann styling. And after its mechanical refresh this Triumph TR6 is ready to hit the open road.
