1973 VW 412 LE Variant

Highlights

・Very rare in UK
・Aircooled with fuel Injection
・From Dry Climate

The Background

Following on from their success with the Type 1,2 and 3 VW came up with the Type 4 which was billed as a mid sized family saloon.
Larger than its predecessors (beetle etc) and with the largest engine VW offered at the time. It was a given VWs trademark Flat 4 boxer engine with a 1.8 capacity and then fuel injected.
In the 1970s South Africa was the 3rd largest consumer of the Type 4 which is hardly surprising as one of the factories was in South Africa. They were a popular model and in estate form had a very reasonable/versatile load capacity.

The History

This particular example has been Imported from South Africa.
It was built in the VW assembly plant in South Africa which started assembling Volkswagen vehicles in 1948 and still produces vehicles today.
This car made a short journey to Krugersdorp which is 1700m above sea level, near Johannesburg, famous for its many gold mines. Therefore it has enjoyed a life in a very dry climate.
It is a 1 owner car since new, it was stored in a garage for the last 15 years prior to 2017 when Rudi Cars in Krugersdorp found it and recommissioned it.
Since arriving on our shores the car has been kept in a dry barn, under cover.

The Paperwork

The car has already been UK Registered, the V5 and all supporting import paperwork is present along with the cars owners manual.
Due to its age the car is of course tax and MOT exempt.

The Interior

The interior is tidy however the carpets do have some wear/holes as per the pictures. The olive/green leather seats front and back are in great condition for a 47 year old vehicle.
The dash has unfortunately suffered from the heat and has cracked and some of the wood veneer has lost its finish, presumably again as a result of the heat. The boot carpet has come away from its sound deadening layer. All in all, its perfectly useable inside but would benefit from a few small repairs.

The Exterior

The exterior has survived the heat well and is very original. There are small areas of “patina” in places but overall the car is very tidy for something of this age.
There is a small piece of waistline trim missing on the drivers door, the chrome bumpers and other trims are all present and in decent shape. The driver's side mirror has a crack in the glass.
The car currently sits on its standard steels with hubcaps, a classic VW look, however the tyres will need replacing as the rubber has perished in places, they all hold air.

The Mechanics

The car runs and drives well and fires up for the first time. Mechanically it has surface wear but it’s perfectly usable and works as it should.
Due to this being a South African import it is also RHD which for the UK is an added bonus.

The Appeal

Aircooled VWs are very popular and the scene that revolves around them here in the UK is huge. Not many of these Type 4 Variant Estates survive in the UK due to our horrendous weather 11 and a half months of the year so to see one in solid shape like this is a real treat.
According to Howmanyleft.com there are only 8 of these in the UK and only 4 are registered on the road so in the rare stakes this one is top trumps.
If your after a slice of aircooled vw life, want something different and don’t mind the patina look, which actually is highly sought after on the VW Scene, this car would be an easy project. Some altitude adjustment to bring her nearer the tarmac combined with the right wheels and this car would be turning heads at all the Aircooled VW shows.
Alternatively, if shiny paint is your thing , the car would need a sympathetic restoration and you’d have not only a very rare car but a very rare collectible car on your hands, either way youd be one of only a handful of owners in this country which is quite an exclusive club to be in.
The choice is yours.
