1973 Volkswagen Type 2 Baywindow Camper

Highlights

  • Originally based in Kenya, then Australia
  • Imported to the UK in 2008 and now registered with all tax and duties paid
  • Repainted and restored with a brand new interior

The Appeal

There’s not many vehicles out there which rival the Volkswagen camper van’s sheer influence on pop culture. These bread-loaf shaped motors have been an essential fixture of the music world and hippy culture for decades, as well as being highly usable commercial vehicles.
Originally based in Kenya, this pleasant example found itself in Australia for much of its life, before touching far less summery British soil and undergoing work in 2004. A restoration and much cherished ownership later, the current owner is ready to send this attractive Bay Window camper to a new home.

The History and Paperwork

  • First registered in 1974 in Kenya
  • Moved to Australia circa 1976
  • Invoices prove work was carried out in the UK in 2004 and 2005
  • Registered for the first time in the UK in 2008
  • Purchased by current owner in 2013
  • Undergone a full restoration and refit
  • Small mechanical modifications
  • Vehicle includes:
  • One set of keys (with fetching campervan keyring)
  • Stamped service record from 1974 to 1992
  • Previous MOT certificates
  • Multiple invoices for work done in 2004, 2005, 2012, and 2013
  • MOT exempt - last tested in 2017 at 97,352 miles
  • Only 1,200 miles done since this test

The Interior

  • Fair interior with several rebuilt or newly fitted components
  • Originally a 7-seater bus
  • Beige vinyl driver and passenger seat in good order with no rips or tears
  • Some scuffs and marks to the sides of the bolsters
  • Some corrosion to the seating mounts
  • Dashboard is clean and tidy with all instruments in good order
  • Wicker shelves mounted under the dash with some age-commensurate wear
  • All instruments appear clean and readable with a modern music system installed
  • Door cards in good order with no major faults
  • Black and white tiled linoleum laid in the camper area
  • Newly installed collapsible table
  • New rear 'rock and roll' bed, which folds into a pair of tidy seats
  • Overhead storage locker
  • Some corrosion on the internal metalwork and window frames
  • Staining to the headlining, with some holes and cracking surrounding the windows

The Exterior

  • Bright orange and white exterior, resprayed from the van’s original blue
  • All corroded bodywork was reportedly cut out and welded in during restoration
  • No dents discernable in the bodywork
  • Some chips, bubbling and paint loss, particularly on the sills
  • Some marking to the matte white bumpers, including a touch-up job with slightly mismatched paint
  • One window appears to have been sealed with duct tape, due to excessive corrosion
  • Clear blistering to the left-hand rear grille
  • All chromework shows some light pitting and age-commensurate patina
  • Fitted with a rooftop rack, in fair order
  • Sat on a full set of period-correct wheels, shod in Tristar tyres

The Mechanics

  • Re-engined at some point in the vehicle’s past with a factory-spec engine
  • VW 1600cc twin-port air-cooled engine
  • 4-speed manual transmission
  • Engine has been rebuilt with new bearings and running gear
  • Newly installed clicker fuel pump
  • Accuspark electronic ignition modules fitted
  • Oil reportedly changed regularly
  • Engine bay looks to be in good order with no major causes for concern
  • Vehicle reportedly starts, changes gear and brakes exactly as expected with no issues

Summary

While this T2 Camper could do with some extra work, there's no doubt it's already a highly usable, eminently capable van for the ardent traveller.
