The Appeal
Regarded as the climax in the evolution of the Beetle, the 1303 grew slightly in overall length, increasing luggage capacity and allowing for the long-lived metal dashboard and flat windscreen to be replaced by a soft vinyl dash and an aerodynamic curved windscreen.
The ‘Super Beetle’ as it was termed, also featured Macpherson strut front suspension resulting in improved road manners. As they had with previous Volkswagens, Osnabrück-based coachbuilder Karmann produced a convertible version.

Here we have one of these highly-prized Karmann Cabriolets and this one is even rarer, equipped with an automatic gearbox.

The Interior

The Mechanics
- 1,600cc twin port engine (replaced in 1992)
- Early example to be fitted with an alternator rather than a dynamo
- Carburettor and air filter replaced - original air filter is supplied with the car
- Rare automatic gearbox selects gears as it should
- Pertronix electronic ignition fitted
- New suspension bushes, steering rods and dampers
- The steering box has been rebuilt and the brakes and pipework replaced
