The Appeal

Early 911s are one of the most sought after and desirable classics on the market – and for good reasons. From the stylish design to the simple yet robust mechanicals and excellent driving experience, they offer a genuinely usable and enjoyable way to own a classic sports car. But finding a good one can be tricky. Which is where this car comes into its own…
Built in late 1973 this 1974 model year 911 may be a right-hand drive model, but it wasn’t actually registered in the UK until 1977. It was comprehensively restored in recent years, with a comprehensive photographic record detailing the work, and is now presented in lovely condition.
If you’re looking for a classic that delivers a thrilling drive, evocative sounds and suave styling, then an air-cooled Porshce must surely be on your list – and this is a very handsome example of the breed.

The History and Paperwork

  • Built in late 1973 (1974 model)
  • First registered in the UK in January 1977
  • 12 owners from new
  • Current owner since September 2011
  • Restored by the vendor over a period of three years
  • Complete and comprehensive photo record of the restoration
  • The vendor knew the car from the late 1980s as they used to maintain it for a previous owner
  • Stored in a heated, dry garage by the vendor
  • 90,935 miles on the clock
  • Historic vehicle status – tax and MOT exempt
  • Accompanied by the owner’s handbook, many invoices and old MOT certificates
  • Porsche Certificate of Authenticity

The Interior

  • Extensively refurbished
  • Cinnamon leatherette with beige fabric inlays
  • Modern Pioneer CD/radio system
As part of the restoration, the interior has been comprehensively refurbished, with the seats having been neatly retrimmed and new carpets fitted throughout. In fact, the seats and door cards show very little evidence of wear, with just hints of light use. The carpets are in similarly good order, with no damage, staining or threading apparent.
One of the joys of an early 911 is how minimal and relatively spartan the interior is. What trim there is here is very well presented, clean, straight and undamaged. The simple, clear VDO gauges are nice and easy to read, while all of the driving controls present well, with some light and welcome patination, but no significant wear or damage we could see. We only noticed one issue worth mentioning - some light “spidering” to the top of the gear knob. It’s in keeping with the car’s age though, and does not affect the operation in any way. The vendor tells us that everything works just as it should, with no issues to mention.
At the front, there is a useful luggage space under the bonnet, trimmed with black carpet. It also contains a spacesaver spare wheel.

The Exterior

  • Some new panels and fabrication where needed
  • Professional respray in Lime Green (N8V9)
  • Classic ‘whale tail’ rear engine cover
  • Original ATS cast wheels
As the car underwent restoration, the vendor tells us that they replaced any body panels that were beyond recovery, as well as carrying out any necessary fabrication work. The results are clear, with the bodywork looking to be in excellent condition, with no damage or corrosion we could discern. It all appears to be straight and crisp, with neat lines and even panel gaps.
Quite rightly, the vendor decided to refinish the car in its original ‘Lime Green’ factory colour scheme. It’s a striking period colour that really suits the 911, especially with the smart ‘Porsche’ side stripes. The paintwork was professionally applied and looks to have been very well done. Other than the odd minor blemish, the only issue we noted was a small crack in the paint above the upper near-side of the engine cover. Otherwise, the paintwork presents in fine condition.
As a Targa, there’s the usual black vinyl roof panel, which shows in very good order and pops in and out simply – so it takes but a minute to go from coupé to “million miles of sky” open-top driving. As a 1974MY car, the roll-over hoop is finished in attractive brushed Nirosta steel and looks very smart indeed. The rest of the external trim appears to be in fine fettle – the brightwork wears a nice lustre, the iconic whale tail looks in excellent condition and the high rubber-bellowed bumpers don’t show any damage.
It’s great to see that the car is still riding on the correct 15-inch cast ATS wheels too. Here they have been finished with black centres and polished lips. We didn’t see any evidence of kerbing or lacquer damage either. All four wheels are shod with a matched set of Pirelli tyres which looks to have good tread and no sidewall damage we could discern.
Peeking underneath, it’s clear that the vendor has gone to great lengths to ensure the underside is as well finished as the rest of the car. It looks extremely clean and solid, with no signs of damage or corrosion.

The Mechanics

  • Rebuilt 2,687cc, air-cooled, naturally aspirated flat-six
  • Five-speed manual transmission
  • Full stainless steel exhaust system
Popping the engine cover up, it’s obvious that significant time has been spent dressing and presenting the engine in a fine manner after it was rebuilt. From the lovely clean fan housing to the colour coded rocker covers, it’s a fine example of attention to detail and good maintenance.
We’re told by the vendor that a hydraulic timing chain kit has been fitted and that the engine runs perfectly, with no issues at all to note. They report no issues with the rest of the car’s powertrain and drivetrain either, which look to be in similarly good order.
With that air-cooled flat-six burbling away as it drives the rear wheels, plus the involvement of a proper manual transmission, it’s no wonder this era of 911 is so revered.

Summary

Restored throughout to a very high standard, this handsome 2.7-litre Targa would make for a wonderful summer classic. Whether you’re looking for a show car or simply something to enjoy on the weekends, we think this increasingly rare and desirable machine would be the perfect choice.
