The Appeal

When a bike is named by Cycle magazine as “the most sophisticated production bike ever”, selected for inclusion in the Guggenheim Museum’s Art of the Motorcycle exhibition and ranked by the Society of Automotive Engineers of Japan as one of the 240 Landmarks of Japanese Automotive Technology, you know it must be something pretty special.

And so it is. When Honda launched its CB750 at the 1968 Tokyo Show, the motorcycling world was taken aback. Never was a motorcycle so fast (it would hit 120mph), comfortable and well-mannered, and yet still within reach of most enthusiasts. In truth, it really was something of a revolution in motorcycling.

Anyone who appreciates high-quality motorcycles must try a CB750, and you really want the best one you can find. In our opinion, that would be this one. It’s freshly emerged from a comprehensive restoration during which it was stripped right down to its bones and faithfully rebuilt to original specification with many new parts. This is not the first nor even the second CB750 the vendor has restored to concours condition, so you can rest assured that it has been in the best possible hands.

 • Sold with its current V5C and an extensive collection of invoices from David Silver Spares and Dutch spares supplier CMS

The Condition

 • Absolutely outstanding cosmetic condition following its restoration
 • Frame and tank repainted in their original black and Candy Sunset Orange respectively
 • Brand new tank and side panels from Motorcycle Yamiya in Japan
 • Brand new seat
 • Wheels stripped, hubs polished, rebuilt with all-new spokes, D.I.D. rims and tyres
 • New handlebars, speedometer and rev counter (original gauges supplied)

Have you ever seen a CB750 look as good as this one? We’d wager not, unless it was one of the handful of others restored by the vendor, a consummate and skilled enthusiast. If it looks like new, that’s because much of it is. The tank, side panels, seat, wheel rims and spokes, handlebars and gauges are all new items, and the remaining parts which haven’t been replaced have been refurbished and polished to a showroom shine.

We could scour this bike trying to identify a fault, but we’d probably have to give up. It’s one of those bikes for which the phrase ‘better than new’ may well be appropriate and, if you take it to shows and rallies, we’ll be surprised if you don’t end up with a bulging trophy cabinet very soon.

Besides the complete bike, the vendor will also supply the new owner with the original speedometer and rev counter, so they can check the Honda’s original mileage for themselves. We told you he was meticulous, didn’t we?

The Mechanics

 • Engine stripped and rebuilt
 • Brand new David Silver exhaust system
 • Carburettor stripped and ultrasonically cleaned
 • New spark plugs, points, HT leads and NGK caps
 • All filters replaced
 • All engine covers removed and polished
 • New clutch and throttle cables and brake lines
 • New chain fitted and rear sprocket polished
 • New wiring harness
 • New shock absorbers

While we’ve not seen this bike run, we’re pretty confident from all the work that’s been done to it that it will start and perform just like it did when new. Of course, with only two miles behind it since the restoration, it still needs to be run in, but after 500 miles or so you’ll start to get an idea of just why the CB750 took the motorcycle world by storm back in 1968.

Since the Honda has not yet been submitted for an M.o.T. test, we are unable to make any guarantees about it, but we have every confidence in the vendor when he tells us that “every nut and bolt was replaced” and “it runs perfectly and needs nothing”. You can see for yourself how good it looks. Just imagine how well it goes.

The Summary

We’ve probably made it pretty clear already that this is one of the best CB750s to be found anywhere but, just in case the message hasn’t got through yet, this is one of the best CB750s to be found anywhere. The restoration left no stone unturned and now this Honda presents a rare opportunity to own one virtually as it was when it left the factory.

Having been finished to such a high standard, a bike like this would be make an ideal centrepiece for any collection or even a museum, or else it would be a worthy contender in any motorcycle concours. Then again, if you just want a really well-built bike to use and enjoy, it would be just right for that purpose, too.
