1973 Alfa Romeo 2000 GT Veloce

Photos provided by the vendor

Highlights

  • The last and most powerful variant of Bertone’s 105 Series Coupés
  • Sports Alfa’s exquisite 2.0-litre twin-cam under the bonnet which is mated to a five-speed gearbox
  • Presented in very good condition both mechanically and cosmetically

The Appeal

Anyone who's ever owned a 105 Series Alfa Romeo knows that they’re very special machines indeed. The 2000 GT Veloce represented the final revision of the successful coupé range and we’re delighted to offer this fine 1973 example.
Weighing in at just over a metric ton, that characterful twin-cam in 2.0-litre form produced around 130 horsepower, making this a very sprightly machine in its day. A five-speed manual gearbox set it apart from most of its competition and, with dainty Bertone styling, these Alfas were just about the prettiest coupés on the road.
Recently acquired from a collector, this particular GT 2000 Veloce has undergone some servicing and fine tuning and we’re informed it is now a particularly healthy specimen.

The History and Paperwork

  • The vendor informs us that the car was previously restored by professionals in Italy
  • Registered in Spain
  • Acquired from a car collector
  • Recent servicing and fine tuning results in this car being ready to use

The Interior

  • Period-correct cream vinyl upholstery
  • Very original with no later additions we could discern
  • Minimal wear anywhere to be seen
It’s fair to say that old Italian cars are not renowned for ergonomic interiors but 105 Series Coupés seem to buck that trend. Sure, the switchgear placement is a little haphazard but you soon get used to it. Unusually for any car of this vintage, the seats strike the perfect balance between comfort and supportiveness and can easily be adjusted to accommodate drivers of all shapes and sizes.
Finished in cream, the vinyl upholstery in this example is presented in fantastic condition, with very little wear and certainly no heavy creasing or damage.
The rear seats are very usable in these cars too, unlike the token gesture of a barely padded parcel shelf in many of its sporty rivals. These too remain in very fine shape with no damage or excessive deterioration we could discern. There is even a cut-out in the rear portion of the headlining to allow for more headroom without compromising the exterior styling. Clearly, these cars were very well thought through.
Speaking of the headlining, it’s in lovely condition, with no damage or notable sagging apparent. The carpets display little in the way of wear so far as we could see and the vendor informs us they’re in really good shape. We’re also informed that the inside of the boot would benefit from a good clean but is otherwise in nice condition.
With its veneer fascia and ‘2000’ script to remind you of what’s under the bonnet, the dashboard appears in really good order and does not appear to have been adversely affected by the sun. The Jaeger instruments remain very legible and we understand these, and the switchgear all operates correctly.

The Exterior

  • Smart blue paintwork
  • Straight bodywork with no signs of corrosion or damage
  • Looks to be very sound underneath
With dainty styling courtesy of Giorgetto Giugiaro while working at Bertone, these are very handsome little cars and this one is especially smart. The blue paintwork presents well, holding a good shine with no major blemishes on show. The swage lines remain clearly defined and the doors shut well, suggesting this body shell to be very sound indeed.
All of the trim appears in good order, as do the light lenses and windows. We like how this example continues to sit upon its factory steel wheels which are complete with the correct chrome trim pieces. The vendor informs us that the wheels have been recently repainted, so they now look fantastic. It wears those particularly exotic Biscione badges on the C pillars which also appear in fine shape.
Underneath, we couldn’t see any obvious signs of corrosion and the vendor informs us that it’s in very good condition.

The Mechanics

  • 2.0-litre DOHC four-cylinder engine
  • Five-speed manual gearbox
  • Very smart under the bonnet
Few four-cylinder engines are half as pretty as an Alfa Romeo twin-cam. Those aluminium cam covers lend these cars a really exotic feel and you’re not left feeling short-changed when it fires into life with an enthusiastic burble.
This example is equipped with a pair of Solex carburettors which the vendor informs us have recently been cleaned. It now starts readily and runs very smoothly with no untoward noises from the engine or driveline.
Out on the road, these 105 series cars are terrific to drive. Despite the lack of driver aids and power steering, you can place them on the road perfectly steering between finger and thumb, with the lightest touch. The vendor reports that it handles well, shifting through gears smoothly and braking as it should.

Summary

We love to see these 2000 GT Veloces and there should really be room reserved in every collection for an Alfa Romeo of this vintage. It’s unusual to find such a fine example as this, so don’t miss this excellent opportunity.
