1972 Triumph TR6

Highlights

  • A beautiful and highly restored example of these fantastic English sports cars
  • The car was in the previous owner's family for two generations passing from uncle to nephew
  • It has been well maintained and looked after for decades and has been brought back to top form by the current owner

The Background

The Triumph TR6 hit the UK streets in January 1969 and was the next generational step for Triumph from the previously short lived TR5. The TR6 delivered a fresh new body shape courtesy of the renowned German manufacturer, Karmann. The new design was smooth and sleek and thanks to wider wheels from standard the TR6 now had a low and lean appearance to match its speed.

The TR6 was highly successful for Triumph with more TR6’s being produced than any other previous TR. The TR6 would go on to sell over ninety-thousand units before it was replaced by the TR7 in 1976. Power was delivered via a six cylinder 2.5 litre engine and the UK market got the best of the bunch.

The UK TR6 featured mechanical fuel injection versus the US line that had carburettors. This alteration meant that the UK models produced a highly respectable 150 horsepower from factory. With figures of 0-60 in just 8.2 seconds and a top speed of 120mph it wasn’t a surprise that the TR6 sold strongly!
The TR6 six offered English buyers a great mix of improved reliability, more practicality, thanks to the body redesign creating a far larger boot, a beautifully smooth yet sharp new body style and the performance figures and feel to match.

The History

The TR6 moved around the UK from Buckinghamshire in 1982 to Surrey and East Sussex before moving down to the South coast around Poole and Bournemouth. The TR6 moved down to the South in 1993 after being bought from Newland Motors in Sussex. Since then the car has remained in the same area where it has passed from uncle to nephew.

The previous owner acquired the car from his uncle in late 2017 where it began to have work completed to bring it back up to mechanical order. The car was then purchased from the previous owner by the garage where most of the work was completed before it was bought from the company by the current owner in 2021.

Sadly the current owners partner doesn’t enjoy the car and this combined with a lack of use has made the current owner decide it is time to move the TR6 on to a new owner who can cherish it.

The Paperwork

The car does come with a good amount of paperwork. Sadly it seems that some of the paperwork from the previous owner and his uncle has been lost at some point down the line. However, there are still a number of invoices detailing work carried out on the car under this previous ownership, most notably a reconditioned gearbox at 75,900 miles.

Alongside this there is a large stack of past MOT certificates that date back through the previous owners as well as a new and valid MOT certificate to give the new owner peace of mind.

Other notable pieces of paperwork include a vehicle registration document from the previous owner in East Sussex and the original sales receipt for the purchase of the car in 1993. Happily there is a large amount of invoices and receipts for the parts and work carried out on the vehicle during its previous ownership and the restoration work that was carried out during that period and under the company’s ownership.

The Interior

The interior of the TR6 is in very good condition overall with only a few small signs of wear. The vinyl across the top of the dashboard is in excellent condition with no marks or damage and has clearly been treated and looked after. The lower dash vinyl surround does show some signs of damage with some minor splits visible but nothing major.

The woodwork across the dash is excellent and still gives off a bright and rich luster. The vinyl seats are both in excellent condition with no marks or tears and very little wear to the seat bolsters.

The carpeting and floor areas are clean and tidy, again showing very little wear. There are some signs of wear to the steering wheel and gear knob. The steering wheel has some fading and has been worn down in places and the gear knob shows some small nicks to the rubber coating but these are very minimal and overall it does not detract from the quality of the interior finish.

If anything it gives the car a sense of loving use that fits its history. All the switches and buttons are present and in good working order along with the vinyl soft top that is in excellent condition and raises and lowers smoothly.

The Exterior

The TR6 looks simply stunning in that original saffron yellow finish that really highlights the flowing lines and style of the 70’s. The car was originally a blue colour but has been recently resprayed back to this factory spec colour.

The respray work has been carried out to a very high standard and means that the paintwork is in excellent condition throughout with little to no signs of markings. The chrome-work on the TR6 is also in excellent condition and really pops against that rich yellow in the wintery sunlight. Thanks to the comprehensive restoration the bodywork looks fantastic with good panel gaps all round and no signs of dents or damage.

All the rims are in excellent condition with the painted steels in grey really showing off the bright chrome strip around the rims. Overall this TR6 really asks for nothing externally, simply to be admired for that iconic look.

The Mechanics

The TR6 has been well maintained mechanically and has only recently undergone a full service that included spark plugs and a new Bosch fuel pump. As well as the service the car has also had a new electronic ignition fitted in 2017, a starter motor replacement in 2018 and a complete clutch kit in 2019.

Most notably the car had a new speedo fitted sometime between 2007-2008 that means that the odometer has started anew, although the current owner does include the original mileage from the last MOT prior to the speedo change to maintain the car's true mileage. The TR6 shows no hesitation when roaring into life in the cold winter air and runs very smoothly on idle.

Lifting the bonnet reveals that lovely 2.5 litre engine that looks very clean and tidy with plenty of areas of nicely gleaming chrome. The new fuel pump and electronic ignition means that the car runs very well and it can still kick up some dust if you give it a reason.

The sprightly six cylinder sounds great out the back and pulls along very comfortably with smooth gear changes and smooth pick up. One thing to note is that the car has never been converted to run on unleaded fuel but the previous owners have always used an additive due to the low volume of miles the car covers.

The Appeal

Upon the launch of the TR6 in 1969 The Autocar declared that it ‘was the last real sports car’ and at the time they may well have been right. The market had no comparison when it came to price and performance that the TR6 offered. Today it remains a brilliant price to performance opportunity. The TR6 offers buyers a refined and comfortable two seater sports car whose styling still holds a candle in today's modern world.

With those flowing body lines juxtaposed to the hard angles back and front the TR6 still catches the eye, even more so in that delicious saffron yellow! This is a fantastic opportunity for buyers to get hold of an incredibly well looked after and updated example of this iconic British sports car.

With the modern touches of electronic ignition the TR6 is a usable classic that otherwise is original through and through. With the top down, the wind in your hair and the rasp of that six cylinder in your ears this TR6 is a delight and one that can still get you into trouble, and what’s better than that!
