1972 Triumph Stag Mk1

Highlights

  • Tidy example inside & out
  • Body restoration and repainted in 2019
  • Previously restored in the late 2000s
  • Four previous owners

THE APPEAL

V8-powered, open-topped and plenty of room for the family, the Triumph Stag is a star from the 70s that has become more desirable in later years thanks to refinements and improvements implemented by enthusiasts following the end of its production in 1977.
Designed by the famous Giovanni Michelotti, the Stag is a sharp-lined stunner, with a soundtrack to match and a great classic for any level of enthusiast. This 1972 registered Mark I has undergone a couple of restorations in its past, with the latest being a few years ago, the result is a great example of the icon that needs little to bring it up to Concours condition.

THE HISTORY AND PAPERWORK

  • Registered May 1972
  • Current ownership since 2010
  • V5c present
  • Past MOT Certificates
  • Stag technical manual
  • Restoration photos
  • Invoices from the early 2000’s
  • Only four previous owners
There is unfortunately no documentation for either of the car's restorations other than physical photos for the early overhaul and digital for the later body restoration. The car has been maintained well, with regular services being carried out however no documentation has been kept for any work with the few invoices included from the early 2000s and prior to the restoration.

THE INTERIOR

  • Black leather trim
  • Minor wear on the front seat
  • Overall very tidy and enjoyable
Inside the Stag, you’re greeted with sporty luxury, with black leather seats and wooden trim being the predominant features. The seats have some small wear but are in overall good condition, which is how you would best describe the interior truthfully. It's in fair shape but there are a couple of bits here and there that could be replaced or repaired for perfection to be reached. None of these minor things takes any enthusiasm away when you sit behind that gorgeous steering wheel, however. With the V8 roaring and the roof down, there’s very little that can compete on the enjoyment scale.

THE EXTERIOR

  • Great paint
  • Body Restored in 2019
  • Chromework blemishes
  • Convertible roof in good condition
Italian designed and British built, the Stag is a muscular, masculine brute that looks just as good as it sounds. The white paint looks fantastic thanks to a comprehensive body restoration back in 2019 when the car had some minor metal treatment before being repainted back to its original white colour. The contrasting black roof operates easily and fits easily and appears to be free from any issues. There are a couple of blemishes present, mainly on the chromework which is showing some slight pitting and there is also a small dent in the driver's door. Overall, the car is a fine example of the British classic.

THE MECHANICS

  • Original Triumph 3.0L V8 Engine
  • Overhauled in the early 2000s
  • Tuned and serviced 2019
During our visit, the car was driven a short distance to a more suitable location for the photography. The V8 started without issue and roared purposefully. The ear-pleasing burble provided is a suitable pairing to the car's muscular appearance and with the top down you’ve got a winning combination sure to provide miles of enjoyment. During the car's body restoration in 2019, the engine was removed, checked over and tuned to ensure healthy performance, it has also been maintained annually by the current keeper, however, no invoices or documentation has been retained. The car is reported to be in great running order and starts on the button every time without question.

SUMMARY

The Triumph Stag is becoming an increasingly rare classic, with only around 1,500 reported to be left on UK roads. Its reputation has been revived over the years thanks to dedicated enthusiasts and is now deserving of that icon title, a great car suitable for any level of classic car enthusiast.
