The Appeal
Produced by the Norton-Villiers Motorcycle Company between 1967 and 1977, the Commando proved to be a popular bike the world over and remains one of the most exquisitely styled motorcycles of all time.
In 1999, legendary motorcycle builder Kenny Dreer acquired around 50 Commandos and set about re-engineering them to suit the modern rider. Dreer increased their engine capacity from 750/850 to 880cc and claimed to have replaced around 80 percent of the original parts.
Here we have a beautifully presented VR880, which the vendor believes is one of perhaps two in Europe today.
The History and Paperwork
- Acquired by the vendor in 2011
- Matching numbers
- The vendor apparently has extensive Norton documentation, owner’s manual, parts lists and a workshop manual
- Revue technique française
- Magazine VR880 tests by Cycle World September 1999 and Le Moto Revue Classic May/June 2013
The Condition
- Striking paint scheme
- Black leather seat with red piping
- Stainless steel wheels, fixtures and fittings
- New Dunlop K 81 tyres
- Everything works
This motorcycle is exquisitely finished and you can immediately appreciate the care and attention that went into building it. The use of colour is very effective with the white tank and side panels making the contrasting black powder coated frame and mudguards stand out. The vendor reports that the paintwork is “concours winning” with pinstripes painted by Mitch Kim.
Stainless steel and chrome is used in abundance and really suits the high quality, handbuilt feel of this bike. The brightwork presents really well and the vendor comments that it is in excellent order with the only minor signs of use being evident on the exhaust pipes. Many of the fixings are made from durable stainless steel and the same goes for the wheels and wing mirrors. A chrome finish is also applied to the headlight, handlebars, fuel tank cap, front drum brakes, chain case, gear selector, brake pedals as well as the two fork caps and bearing cover for the steering.
The vendor informs us that the instruments and wiring harness are new and everything works exactly as it should. There is very little wear we could see to any of the controls including the perishable components such as the grips and black leather seat complete with red piping.
Its attractive stainless steel wheels are shod with new Dunlop K 81 tyres which are in excellent shape. The Norton is supplied with two sets of keys for the ignition and an additional two for the steering lock. Roadster handlebars are also available should the next owner wish to adjust the riding position.

The vendor informs us that this example has recently received a new inner case with an Alton electric starter - (the original accompanies the bike). This upgrade makes the Norton even more usable and the vendor reports that it runs and rides brilliantly.
Summary
