The Appeal
Carlight are one of the big names of the caravan industry and were viewed as the Rolls Royce of caravan builders with a history that can be traced back to the 1930s. The Sleaford-based firm were renowned for their craftsman-built interiors and the clever way in which their designers had managed to cram so much equipment into such a compact space.
Today they are very much sought after by discerning collectors of vintage caravans who want the ultimate in classic caravan design. Make no mistake, Carlight were at the top end of caravan craftsmanship. This particular example is highly practical for a family of four and was bought in restored condition in 2008 by the current owner who runs a glamping business. He picked it up from Bradford and said it towed fine. The brakes were serviced and the vehicle hasn’t done any mileage since then. Inside the caravan has been restored to a high standard and you have to marvel at the creativity of the original designers. It sleeps four with ease and offers an L-shaped kitchen and a washroom with a sink and space to add a portable loo. The original gas system has been removed for safety and a modern heater fitted, but the original period items are included.
This actual caravan was featured in the hardback book ‘My Cool Caravan’ and this is included in the sale. This details that the vehicle had an 18-month restoration and that it was repainted in the original paint colour at the Carlight factory.
