The Appeal

Produced from 1967, the T2 was the refreshed face of the classic T1 VW camper/bus. Easily identifiable from the ‘Bay’ front window that replaced the original’s split-screen, it went on to become an iconic representation of the counter-culture in the USA, and was widely associated with the surf scene.
Nowadays, these classic campers are sought-after and very desirable. Offering a practical camping solution in a small footprint, with a relatively simple mechanical setup, a massive range of extras and upgrades, and a vast support network and fanbase, many consider them the quintessential campervan.

Not many vehicle’s engender the kind of affection and goodwill that the T2 does, they’ve been a part of so many people’s lives that it’s easy to see why they remain a popular choice as a classic or even as a daily driver.

Having been subject to a significant restoration inside and out, this T2 is in superb condition internally. So much so, in fact, that we think it looks better than it did when it rolled off the production line. Everything is in excellent or as-new condition.
In the front, the seats have ben refreshed, retrimmed in stylish diamond-stitched grey vinyl and filled with new memory-foam padding. The new wood-rimmed steering wheel and stainless trigger gear stick are a classy and welcome modern touch.

The front cabin also benefits from a new white, perforated vinyl headlining. Between the seats, the current owner has installed a bespoke wooden storage area, featuring in-built cupholders and designed to match the wood trim in the rear compartment.

It’s a very tactile unique and beautifully executed feature.
In the rear compartment, there have been a host of improvements and upgrade. With quality grey carpeting and wipe-clean white and grey vinyl flooring running throughout, it’s a practical environment for camping and easy to keep clean.

The seating area is generous with a number of hidden storage compartments, and is trimmed in the same beautiful grey vinyl finish as the from cabin. The kitchenette has been finished with a bespoke wooden counter top and a matching table that can be set up in the cabin or in two positions outside the cabin.

With complementary, bespoke wooden window frames and a wood panelled ceiling, it’s a cosy and lovely place to spend time, with lots of creature comforts and upgrades. As well as the heater, there are thermal insulated window covers and USB points in the front and rear compartments.
With the bespoke pop-up roof raised, the living area is generous, light and airy. Plenty for anyone of 6ft to comfortably stand up in. When the bed is deployed, you realise just how much room there is – the bed is slightly bigger than a standard double, so is very generous.

Featuring the same memory foam as the front seats, it’s also heard-wearing yet comfortable.

We can’t think of many better, more stylish ways to enjoy a music festival or a quiet weekend away in the countryside.

The Exterior

  • Professionally stripped and resprayed in two-tone grey and white
  • Bespoke ‘atlas design’ pop-up roof
  • New front floor and sills
  • New glass, rubber seals and brightwork all round
As you’d expect from a vehicle that has been kept garaged and had a professional respray just 3 years ago, the bodywork and paint finish on this T2 camper are excellent. The white-over-grey scheme suits the camper well and lends it a timeless aesthetic.
With all of the brightwork having been replaced with new items during the restoration process, wheels repainted in white with new chrome hubs and new tyres, the exterior is as good as it could be.

Underneath is just as good to be honest – clean, straight and corrosion free. As part of the recommissioning, lots of metal was replaced, including the front floors and the sills.

So you can be confident that this is a very solid example of VW’s camper.

The Mechanics

  • 1,584cc flat-four, air-cooled petrol
  • Manual transmission
  • New Red9Design front suspension/steering setup
  • T25 steering rack (replacing old steering box set-up)
  • 1973 brake disc and caliper conversion with new brake pipes
  • New Butty Bits accelerator, linkage and clutch cable
  • New rear hubs and bearings
  • New rear brakes and handbrake cable
  • New electric fuel pump, E10 resistant fuel lines, Malposisi filter
  • New carburettor
  • New tinware oil cooler and oil pump
  • Conversion to alternator from dynamo
  • New starter and battery
  • New electronic ignition
  • Fuel tank refurbed, new fuel sender
  • New exhaust system
  • Engine fire suppression fitted
The mechanical rebuild of this vehicle has been as comprehensive as the bodywork and interior rebuild. While we haven’t seen the paperwork to confirm the list of new parts, we have no reason to doubt it.

As you can see from the photos, every element of this T2’s drivetrain looked either recently refurbished or brand new. According to the current owner, the previous owner also fitted new pistons and had the engine rebuilt, so what you have here is, to all intents and purposes, almost a brand new vehicle.
We’re assured by the owner that it drives, stops and steers very well. We’d certainly have plenty of confidence to take it on almost any length of journey.

It looks to be in superb condition, and we’ve no doubt it will provide many more years of happy motoring and great memories for its new owners.

Summary

We’ve yet to meet anyone that doesn’t love a good VW T2 camper. And there’s good reason for that - so many of us have either childhood or youthful memories of camping trips, seaside holidays or music festivals where the camper was a key component of the experience.

As an object to explore the world, enjoy life and build great memories, the camper is almost unparalleled. Few vehicles have true character, but these do.

Whether it’s the cheerful burble of that flat-four or the high-riding, cab-forward driving position, nothing else on earth feels like a VW camper.
And as an example of the breed, this is excellent. Rebuilt externally, internally and mechanically with great attention to detail and no expense spared, we’ve rarely seen one in such good condition.

With some truly useful and practical additions and upgrades, a tasteful aesthetic and almost completely rebuilt drivetrain, this is the perfect vehicle for anyone wanting to dive straight into the camper life without having to spend years sourcing and restoring a vehicle.
We’re sure you’ll struggle to find a nicer example than this – and it’s available just in time for the summer!

Absolutely perfect timing for hazy days in the country and lazy days by the sea…
