Highlights

 • Restored example in amazing order
 • Five owners from new
 • Fully known history
 • Beautifully presented inside and out

The Appeal

Over six million VW Beetles were sold over more than 60 years of production, so it’s fair to say it’s one of the all-time classic car icons. Today, there’s a whole thriving scene built up around the legendary little car, from modified examples through to beautifully preserved or restored originals – and that’s pretty much a good description of this one.

It’s a lovely restoration and has been done in its original colour scheme. Sold new in Como, Italy, in 1971, the car has lived in the country for its entire life and has had five owners, the last of whom bought it in 2005 and had it restored to the stunning condition it’s in now. It’s a lovely car in wonderful condition.

The History and Paperwork

 • Five keepers from new
 • In Italy for all of its life
 • Comprehensive restoration
 • Full Italian paperwork
 • Factory build certificate
This is a Beetle 1302, which came with the more powerful 34bhp engine (everything is relative…) and was a slightly higher specification than the standard 1200 model.
It was sold new in 1971 in Carimate (Como) and passed to its second owner in Lecco in 1976, who kept it for 11 years before selling to another local owner. The fourth owner lived in Bergamo and bought the car in 1999, before selling it to a buyer in Brescia in 2005, who had the car professionally restored.

It has all of its historical ownership records as well as a factory build certificate supplied by the VW museum in Wolfsburg which proves that it wears its original chassis and engine numbers.

The Interior

 • Black vinyl seats
 • Perforated trim
 • New carpets
 • Period push-button Blaupunkt radio
It’s basic, as you’d expect from a Beetle, but the cabin of the 1302 is in excellent order with no major issues or signs of wear.
The seats and carpets have been renewed as part of the restoration and are in excellent condition, as is the headlining. One of the highlights of the interior is a fabulous period Blaupunkt radio, which is in perfect order.

The Exterior

 • Iconic Marine Blue
 • Totally original and unmodified
 • Excellent restoration
 • Original wheels and chrome trims
The most recent owner had the Beetle comprehensively restored in the late 2000s and the end result is absolutely superb, resplendent in its original Marine Blue.

The vendor says it is as good underneath as it is on top and there are no notable blemishes at all to its immaculately presented bodywork. It has its original 91J steel wheels with reproduction chrome wheel trims, which are in terrific condition.

The Mechanics

 • Drives well
 • Only 2,092km since restoration
 • No known mechanical faults
The vendor describes the Beetle as being in superb mechanical order. The original engine has been rebuilt and runs well, with a distinctive air-cooled clatter and good oil pressure.
It is said to be absolutely brilliant to drive, with no known issues with the steering, suspension or any of the running gear. Only 2,092km has been covered since the car’s restoration was completed.

Summary

If you want a Beetle that’s as good as they get, then this is a wonderful example of the 1970s iteration of the model in absolutely wonderful order. It’s a fabulous restoration that has been beautifully well-detailed, in great structural and mechanical health and is perfectly ready to show, use and enjoy.
