THE APPEAL
The Rover P6 was the company’s most innovative and radical design. Created by an engineering team led by Spen King and Gordon Bashford, the P6 challenged convention in almost every way.
Although not as radical as the engineers wanted it - for example, Bashford originally said that he wanted hydro-pneumatic suspension and a Boxer engine - it was created in such a way that it was like no other car on the road.
That was largely down to it being fabricated on baseframe to which all of the outer panels were bolted. Not only did the layout make the P6 easy to repair as damaged body panels could simply be unbolted and replaced , but it also made it a terrific car to drive. Indeed, the P6 remains a modern-feeling car even today.
In 1966, it evolved into a proper sports saloon, with the addition of a General Motors-sourced 3.5-litre V8 engine. The car was an instant hit – a proper compact sports saloon.
This one is an early facelifted V8, following the addition of the plastic “egg crate” grille in 1971. Fitted with automatic transmission, it was restored by the previous owner in 2012 and was very much a labour of love. Sadly, he is no longer able to drive, so the car is offered for sale having just been serviced, with a brake overhaul and a full MOT.
