The Appeal
Even today, many MG B’s are available on the market from simple shells to concourse trailer queens and while this example is not ‘concourse’ its pretty close and mechanically it is absolutely magnificent with nothing being left to chance during its 5 year restoration.
Near enough a nut & bolt restoration, everything on this little sports car, at some point, has been restored, replaced or otherwise attended to making it near perfect and ready for decades ahead.

The History and Paperwork
- Massive paperwork folder with every documented part ever purchased
- Current V5
- Old tax discs
Not often do we come across a vehicle with such a well documented restoration such as this MG. Unbelievably every single nut, bolt and clip has been documented with every receipt from MG Hive or MG restoration specialists, all condensed into a spreadsheet to make finding parts, their purchase date, part number and supplier easy to find. Evidently the care and attention that was put into the documentation has likewise been put into the car too.
The Interior
- New leather seats
- New carpets
- Excellent wood trim
Beautiful and classic colour scheme adorns the inside of this roadster, black leather seats with black plush carpets tie in nicely, all being In near perfect condition having only seen a couple of thousand miles of use. The dashboard has been mated well with the gear knob and steering wheel all finished with a high shine including the metal inserts and fittings.
In addition to everything being replaced the safety has been improved with properly fitted modern seat belts. The dash too, including the leatherette top are spot on, original speedometer remains showing the original mileage, all clean, clear and working as they should.
Nothing short of a wipe down to attain a perfect interior.
The Exterior
Finished in vivid tartan red and complemented with bright wire wheels and new black hood this car looks every bit factory fresh. Treated to a new heritage shell In 2001 at the beginning of its 5 year restoration everything fits very well. The boot and bonnet could be tweaked to sit a little more flush but this is a minor thing and still looks superb all round.
The paintwork has been finished to a good standard, a matching finish all round with a couple areas the paint is ever so slightly thin on an edge showing a misting of primer particularly on the nearside sill and scuttle panel, easily remedied by a bodyshop if so desired.
All the brightwork has been fitted really well and is finished to a high standard too with no blemishes or signs of corrosion that we saw and the windscreen aluminium surround is light and well fitted too. With literally only one or two blemishes across the whole car, this is a joy to behold and really wants for nothing.
The Mechanics
- Ivor Searle 18V rebuilt engine
- Sierra 5 speed gearbox T9
- Rebuilt axle and differential
- Servo assisted brakes
- Electronic ignition
The star of the show of this particular MG B is the mechanical side, with absolutely nothing left needing attention this car is 100% mechanically sorted. Despite its restoration completion in 2006, the vehicle clearly has never seen a wet road and has spent its life indoors, meticulously maintained.
A look underneath tells a lot! The chassis almost immaculately clean and undersealed exceptionally well, multiple nuts and bolts replaced along with upgraded shocks and polyurethane bushes.

The car started on the button despite its lack of use showing good reliability and sounded quite different to most MG B’s with its stout stainless exhaust giving a much deeper note but suitably appropriate for a classic.
Keeping things cool is a fresh radiator and electronically activated cooling fan powered by a new wing loom and uprated alternator.

Summary
Simple to maintain, fun and classy, this is a MG B not to be missed and will tick all the boxes. This car is not only mechanically ready for any journey but thanks to a new hood will be water tight too, allowing year round use for years to come.
