1970 Triumph Bonneville T120

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Fastidiously restored
  • Original specification
  • Enthusiast owned

THE APPEAL

The Triumph Bonneville is probably one of the most recognised names from the Triumph lineup throughout the 1960s and into the 1980s.

This particular bike is a 1970 model, which is more desirable than the later Oil-in-frame design, which at the time caused a great deal of controversy.
If you are looking for a 1970 Triumph Bonneville, then they don’t come more perfect than this. It has been given a complete restoration to an exceptionally high standard and, since its completion in 2014, has only covered 1,518 miles.

The Triumph has been enthusiast-owned and used mainly for shows and the odd day out if it has been guaranteed excellent weather.

THE HISTORY AND PAPERWORK

  • V5 is present
  • Registered 5th December 1969
  • Imported from USA in 2011
  • Workshop Manual
The Triumph is reported to have been purchased in the USA by a previous keeper.

The bike's condition was quite good, but the most important thing was that it was a complete bike with all the original parts. It came to the UK in 2011 and underwent a full restoration to an excellent standard, ensuring the finish was how it would have come from the factory.
The bike has been with the vendor since February 2022, who, after wanting one for many years, finally spotted this for sale.

Unfortunately, he has ridden it around the block just a couple of times but has decided it is just not that easy to kick start for him.

THE CONDITION

  • Showroom condition
  • Many original parts
  • High level of detail
  • Nothing has been left untouched
What an amazing bike; this is a real credit to the enthusiast owner who restored it and the recent keepers since then who have kept it in truly outstanding condition.
The wheel is new British stamped with stainless steel spokes and nipples and fitted with a period-correct Dunlop Gold Seal tyre. The drum brake is well presented with the original aluminium casing in good order with no corrosion or pitting.

Above the wheel, the mudguard is the start of the original colour scheme that flows across the bike. The brackets that hold this in place are also chromed and have a bright finish.
The telescopic forks are finished in black to match the frame with rubber gaiters in excellent condition. Moving up, the headlight is unmarked with an excellent finish, the Smiths instruments are working as they should, and the odometer shows just 1,518 miles covered since the restoration was completed. The handlebars, again like the rest of the chrome work, are in excellent condition, with the grips on either end showing no signs of wear.
The showpiece petrol tank has an excellent finish to the paint and has the correct badges and rubber Triumph pads fitted to each side. This flows onto the retrimmed seat, complete with the Triumph logo in gold on the rear, and finally, onto the rear mudguard, which finishes the paint scheme and again is in excellent order.

The rear light has no signs of any splits or cracks, and just like the front, the wheel is an original Made In England wheel, which has been re-chromed and rebuilt to an exceptional standard. The tyre is a Dunlop Gold Seal which is like new.

THE MECHANICS

  • Rebuilt 650cc engine
  • 1,518 miles since the rebuild
  • Lovely bike to ride
We will start with the frame, which has been finished in gloss black, and the numbers can still easily be read and match those on the V5.

The swing arm and chain guard have also been finished in black, both of which have no marks or scratches to point out. The footrests, brake and gear change levers are in excellent condition with no real wear.
The engine has been fully rebuilt along with the four-speed gearbox. It starts up as it should and is reported to change gear, stop and ride as you would expect. The engine has had the aluminium casings polished, along with the gearbox.

To give you an idea of how much detail went into the restoration, the restorer sourced the correct cross-head screws for the engine casings as opposed to using cap-head replacements, as many do.

As you can see from the images, the level of detail around the engine is exceptional, especially on the aluminium components, which show no signs of tarnishing.
