HIGHLIGHTS
- Rakish styling and capable performance
- Excellent white over blue paint
- Updated interior with new seats
THE APPEAL
As the traditional transportation of royalty and government officials, the Rover P5B represents nothing less than a British institution. This coupé version of the P5 retains the 4-door layout from saloon models but features a more rakish roofline.
This very smart example is in fine mechanical order, ready to grace the roads of Britain with its presence. It has also undergone a number of sensible upgrades, making this a superb vehicle that can be used all year round.
The vendor acquired this magnificent motorcar via Car & Classic in August, and we are told that the car remains in exactly the same condition.
THE HISTORY AND PAPERWORK
- First registered 1st February 1970
- Road Tax and MOT exempt
- The car’s most recent MOT expired in January 2023 with no advisories
- Current receipts and maintenance records
- Invoices totalling £5,000 for work carried out in 2021
THE INTERIOR
- Upgraded sound system with digital radio/CD player and Bluetooth
- Cream leather upholstery in excellent condition
- Dashboard instruments in superb condition
The interior of this Rover looks great with new carpets throughout. The seats feature chrome trim and look almost unused; the leather door cards and contrasting wood trim look stunning; the roof lining is also in great condition. And the courtesy lighting above all four doors is a very refined touch.
There are four extra gauges mounted below the instrument cluster. The vendor notes the only fault is that the clock doesn't work, and the rev counter bounces a little after 50 or 60 miles.
Below the dashboard is a full width shelf and a small pull out picnic table, which opens to reveal an original Rover tool kit.
In the boot, the linings are in good condition and there is an enclosed battery compartment and full size spare wheel.
THE EXTERIOR
- Eye-catching two tone colour scheme
- Chrome brightwork in excellent condition
- Extensive work has been carried out on the paintwork and chrome
The white over blue colour combination looks superb on this P5B. Overall, the paintwork looks lovely and the body panels have no dents or dings present. There are some very light polishing marks noticeable on one panel, only visible from certain angles and light conditions.
The brightwork is in superb condition. There is some very minor pitting close up, but overall it's in excellent condition with a full new stainless steel rear bumper reportedly installed in 2022 at a cost of £1,200.
Underneath, the car looks clean and tidy, albeit with a layer of surface corrosion present on some of the components, as we would expect to see on a car of this age. And the wheels appear to be in very good condition, with the tyres retaining good tread.
THE MECHANICS
- Very smooth 3.5-litre Rover V8
- Starts on the button and runs beautifully
- Engine bay very clean and tidy
The car has reportedly received a full front suspension overhaul, along with new exhaust sections, replacement ignition system parts and wiring. The clean and tidy engine bay is a credit to its owners.
The vendor tells us that the engine is mechanically superb and very clean, with no coolant or oil leaks. It always starts first time and is fantastic to drive.
Underneath there is the usual smattering of surface corrosion, but nothing obviously concerning. The rubber suspension bushes and boots appear fresh and supple.
THE SUMMARY
This car maintains the stylish looks of the P5B, while benefitting from some convenient upgrades such as newer seats and a modernised interior. It’s certainly a ‘best of both worlds’ car.
