1970 Rolls-Royce Mulliner Park Ward Coupé

Highlights

  • Limited edition coachbuilt model
  • Exquisite coachwork by Mulliner, Park Ward
  • Underwent a comprehensive restoration between 2013 and 2015

The Appeal

Recalling its glamorous Grands Routiers of pre-war days such as the Phantom II Continental, Rolls-Royce's last-ever coachbuilt models were entrusted to the company's in-house coachbuilder H. J. Mulliner, Park Ward Ltd. There were just two; a two-door coupé (a fine example of which is offered here), or similar convertible (a model so popular it was given its own name of ‘Corniche’ from 1971).
Both models were hand built in the best traditions of British coachbuilding using only materials of the finest quality, including Wilton carpeting, Connolly hide and hand-selected burr walnut veneers. Fastidious attention to detail resulted in these models attracting a premium of around 50% over the ‘regular’ Silver Shadow. The lengthy build process took around 20 weeks for the coupe and slightly longer for the more complex convertible.
In this previously restored 1970 example of Mulliner, Park Ward’s exquisite handicraft, it is easy to comprehend the passion and desire that continues unabated for these grand old dames of British automotive history.

History and Paperwork

  • Restored between 2013 and 2015
  • Dry-stored, dry-driven, garaged when not in use
  • V5 certificate in current keeper’s name
This highly presentable Silver Shadow (MPW) Coupe although registered in January 1970, according to the seller, it was the 1969 show car at the Scottish motor show and then promptly dispatched to retailer H.A. Fox & Sons of Richmond. It received its first registration to David Barker of London on 2nd February, 1970. Little is known of the car’s history thereafter but it was acquired by the current keeper at the end of July, 2020.
Accompanying the sale will be the V5 certificate in the current keeper’s name, the original Owner’s Handbook, the original service booklet stamped up to 45,000 miles and a small file of recent service and maintenance invoices.

The Interior

  • Subject to a full restoration in 2013
  • Smart tan leatherwork and contrasting maroon carpetry
  • Tidy unblemished interior
For its comprehensive restoration between 2013 and 2015, much of the original interior was retained and recommissioned where possible and the car is all the better for it.
As with the dashboard and centre console, the door cards, sun visors and other soft furnishings present in excellent condition. Furthermore, the custodian reports that all the instruments and switchgear work as originally intended. No interior blemishes of any kind were reported by our photographer.
It is quite evident that since its rebuild, the car has been lovingly used but garaged away from the elements when not being enjoyed, such is the high quality of presentation.

The Exterior

  • Presented in original-coloured Regal Red
  • Brightwork is in very good order with minor blemishes
  • Handsome, original 15-inch steel wheels
Stunningly presented in the original colour of Regal Red, this 1970 Rolls-Royce is a truly fine example of Mulliner Park Ward’s work. The paintwork gleams all around the car and no exterior blemishes were noticed by our photographer.
The smart 15-inch steel wheels are painted in the Regal Red body colour and finished with chromed inserts. They all appear blemish free and are a fitted with a healthy set of Avon Turbosteel tyres.
At the front, the headlight lenses are crystal clear and the plastic indicator/reflector lenses show no hint of sun-bleaching. The same may be said for the rear light clusters. The brightwork around the car is in exceptional condition and a glance down each flank shows no evidence of collision damage.

The Mechanics

  • Reconditioned where required during restoration
  • Performs and drives exceptionally well
  • Fully maintained, no expense spared
At the photo location, the 6230cc V8 sound smooth and well-maintained as it was relocated to obtain the best of the available light. The four-speed Hydramatic automatic gearbox connected smoothly with ‘Drive’ engaging with no drama, requiring just a light feathering of the revs to get underway.
The custodian reports the car to be in healthy mechanical condition with steering, brakes, engine, drivetrain and running gear performing as well as their respective engineers intended.
Like the visible parts of this car, the underside and lower sills present in very good order with very light natural oxidation in evidence since the car’s restoration seven years ago.
