The Appeal

Styled by legendary designer Giorgetto Giugiaro when he was only 19 years old as the definition of a young man’s sports coupé, the Alfa Romeo GT junior became one of the most desirable cars of the late Sixties and early Seventies and is adored by collectors today.
The ‘Tipo 105’ came with a 1,290cc version of the legendary Alfa Twin Cam engine, though this one has a bit more poke than that, as it has a later 1,750cc Twin Cam under the bonnet.
It has a fascinating history, having been ordered new in 1970 and sold to an Armed Forces officer, who took the car with him wherever he was posted. Initially, it lived in Germany and later on was shipped to Quebec, Canada, which is where the current owner found it. He imported it back to the UK and with the help of his two car-mad sons has put it back to the condition it’s in today.
Early models, with their sharply scalloped bonnet, are known as the ‘Scalino’ models, meaning ‘letter box’. Why is it that Italians get all the best words? Here’s your chance to buy what must be one of the best examples in the UK.

The History and Paperwork

 • Imported from Canada in 2017
 • Originally UK registered
 • All import paperwork and duties cleared
 • Several bills and receipts
 • Historic photos of the car at the docks
 • Owners’ manual and service book
 • Original bill of sale
The vendor bought the Alfa Romeo in 2017 from an owner in Quebec, who had himself acquired it via the original owner. He’d ordered the car in 1970 and there’s a fascinating letter in the paperwork file from Alfa Romeo Concessionaires in the UK explaining that due to strikes in the factory, the Yellow Ochre GT with black seats that he’d ordered might not materialise, hence why TTU 710H is red with red seats.

There’s even the original bill of sale, documenting it as a yellow car and thanking the owner for the £1,178 he paid for his new Alfa Romeo, £10 of which was spent on optional seat belts. There are also photos of it being loaded at the docks in the UK for its trip to Canada, using a hoist lift to get it on the boat.
During its rebuild the car’s original 1300 engine was removed and a 1750 fitted.

The Interior

 • Retrimmed in rich dark red
 • Original boot mat and tool kit
 • Delightful wood steering wheel
 • Odometer replaced from km/h to mph
The red vinyl seats have been retrimmed and are in excellent condition, while the rest of the cabin is in fine order, with a gorgeous aftermarket wood-rimmed steering wheel. There’s also a period Audiodek radio-cassette, which was presumably fitted to the car in the late 1970s.

The carpets, door cards and headlining are in exceptional condition, the only minor fault with the car being a small crack in the dashboard.

The Exterior

 • Striking Alfa Red
 • Fabulously presented
 • All original chrome
There’s a lot to love about the bodywork of this Alfa on top of its sensational styling. It’s presented in great order, with gleaming bright red paint, immaculate wheels and good tyres all-round. It was repainted a few years ago and still looks stunning.

There are a few signs of ageing to the chrome and hubcaps and a couple of small chips in the paint have been touched in, but it’s a fabulous looking car.
The vendor also has a set of period BWA alloys that were on the car, which he will include in the sale. He prefers the steel wheels himself.

The Mechanics

 • 1750 engine upgrade
 • Pipercross performance air filter
 • Stainless steel exhaust system
 • Original engine include on pallet
It’s not standard under the bonnet, but the car’s original engine is included in the sale and can be easily reinstalled if you wanted to put it back to original. Instead, the car is running a 1750 engine that the vendor believes produces 115bhp – a useful 25bhp increase over the 1300.
It runs well and sounds terrific, thanks to a stainless exhaust system and a fruity Pipercross air filter.
He reports that the car is terrific fun to drive with no known faults. The mileage of the car isn’t fully known as the odometer was swapped from European-spec km/h to mph when the car returned to the UK, but the original odometer is included, as is the original air filter housing.

Summary

This is an utterly gorgeous car in really lovely condition, and it must be one of the prettiest cars ever made. Its history is fascinating, it has been owned by enthusiasts for all of its life and it’s in great running order. The perfect car for any collector of enthusiast of all-time classic Italian cars.
