1969 Austin Cambridge A60 – South African RHD

Highlights

  • Classic Austin
  • RHD from a dry climate
  • Mini restoration

The Background

The A60 was introduced in October 1961. It included a new 1.6-litre version of the B-Series straight-four engine which had first been used in the MGA. Power is 61 hp (45 kW) at 4500 rpm. Modified styling included side chrome stripes – some models with contrasting colour infills – and reduced fins on the rear wings. The style continued to be known as "Farina".
This body covered a chassis that was slightly longer in wheelbase and wider in track than the previous A55. This allowed three people to be accommodated on the rear seat. Anti-roll bars were added to both front and rear suspension. An estate version with the petrol engine, called the Countryman, was also offered. The A60 from 1966 was offered with many optional extras including a more powerful dual carburettor version to keep up with increasing competition from the Continent and Japan.

The History

This Austin was previously owned for some 10 years by a gentleman living in the province of Gauteng, South Africa.
“ Kate “ as he fondly called her was originally owned by Miss Beatrice Margery Lawrence who purchased the car during March of 1969, new, from Leykor Motors Forsdick, the local South African Austin agents.
Along with the car are the original documents, service vouchers and manual owned by Miss Lawrence. The car is original and has only had interior refurbishment and minor respraying addressing fading caused by the South African sun.

The Paperwork

The car comes with the relevant logbook, import documentation and original manuals and service vouchers as pictured.

The Interior

The interior on this A60 is in good shape, it has benefitted from a minor refresh to address wear caused by the South African sun. The red interior looks beautiful and compliments the exterior cream colour bodywork rather well.
The wood effect dash is in good condition, particularly given that it has lived its entire life in South Africa - a testament to the care shown to the car throughout its life.
There is an aftermarket radio which appears to be as old as the car itself. It is a transistor type radio but unfortunately is not currently operative.

The Exterior

The exterior of the car is straight and has certainly benefitted from being in a largely dry climate all its life. If this car was in the UK it would undoubtedly have needed a full restoration long ago,.
The car has been treated to some paint repairs purely to restore the damage done by the harsh South African sun but it has not needed a full restoration. The chrome work looks to be in good condition as are the steel wheels and hub caps fitted to the vehicle.

The Mechanics

The engine cylinder head was overhauled approximately 10 years ago and recently the brakes were completely reworked along with the suspension.
“Kate” is currently licensed and passed a South African roadworthy test in October 2021 and is running well.
There are no known mechanical issues and other than some window rubbers appearing a little perished, the car needs very little attention.

The Appeal

The Austin Cambridge A60 certainly warrants classic status and if you were to stumble across one of these tucked away in a barn in the UK there would be a high probability that rust would have taken hold of it long ago.
Fortunately, this model has spent all its life in sunny South Africa and any damage the sun may have done to fade paint and the seat coverings has been put right.
What you have here then is almost a time-warp condition classic Austin that wants for very little.
If you're looking for a classic Austin A60 they won't come much better than this.
