1969 Audi 100 LS 1.8

Highlights

  • One family ownership since new
  • Garage stored when not in use for its entire life
  • A rare and very original restoration project

The Appeal

Often the classic cars that turn out to be the most endearing are not the fastest or the most exotic, they’re the ones with the best story. This 1969 Audi 100 LS was purchased by the current owner’s grandfather on 18th April 1970.
It remained on the road for a number of years and was last submitted for an MOT test in 2013. We’re informed that it has been garaged since new and while it’s now time for some restoration work, this Audi has survived remarkably well. These early Audi 100s are not a common sight on British roads any more, meaning once this 1.8-litre LS is back up and together, it is sure to attract attention.

The History and Paperwork

  • Acquired by the current owner’s grandfather on 18th April 1970
  • Supplied with the original dealer’s bill of sale
  • We’re informed that there is a collection of invoices for parts, work and servicing over the years
  • Last MOT test was carried out in March 2013, which it passed with a few advisories
  • Now in need of restoration, although some recommissioning work has been carried out recently to get the car moving under its own power
  • Supplied with Audi repair manual

The Interior

  • Grey vinyl upholstery in reasonable condition considering its age
  • Besides a little discolouration, there is little wear to the vinyl seat covers
  • The base of the rear bench seat has been replaced with a brown velour upholstered item
  • The carpeting is now rather tired but remains in situ
  • With an attractive veneer fascia, the dashboard appears in good overall condition with a few small cracks to the top
  • The VDO instruments with their green lettering remain in nice shape
  • The controls are by now rather worn and the gear knob is cracked
  • Besides a few marks on the sun visors, the headlining is in really good order
  • The door cards have some age related marks but are in good shape overall
  • Inside the boot, all looks to be in reasonable condition
  • Much of the interior appears salvageable and we’re sure it will look great once again

The Exterior

  • Cobalt blue paintwork in fair condition for its age, becoming a little dull in places
  • The bodywork appears really straight and the doors still shut well
  • All the trim, including the bumpers remains in good order with a few marks and light pitting
  • Some corrosion is now appearing on the arches, and the bottom of the door skins
  • There is also some localised paint bubbling in places
  • A glance underneath suggests the floors to be quite sound
  • The vendor advises that some restoration work will be in order
  • All the glass and light lenses appear in good order
  • The wheels remain in good order and retain their original trims
  • Overall, this Audi has weathered well over the years, making it a great starting point for restoration

The Mechanics

  • 1.8-litre four cylinder engine
  • Front-wheel drive with inboard disc brakes
  • Recent mechanical recommission included a new fuel pump, fuel lines, battery and ignition system
  • We understand that the car can be run and moves under it own power but besides basic recommissioning, no mechanical work has been carried out

Summary

Seldom does the opportunity arise to acquire a one family owned car that’s entering its 54th year in existence. If you’re looking for a project car with great provenance, this is most definitely one to consider.
