1969 Alfa Romeo GTV

***Vendor supplied images***

Highlights

  • One owner car bought new in 1969
  • Garage kept
  • Last used in 2010 but ran and drove beautifully

The Appeal

Launching in 1967 following the Giulia Sprint GT Veloce, the 1750 GTV featured a host of updates and revisions. Powered by a 1799cc, 120bhp version of Alfa’s twin-cam four cylinder it was known as the sweet spot by Alfa fanatics who know their GTVs. Bertone styled, these elegant coupes are very sought after these days and 1960’s examples are fondly remembered and as such command a pretty penny in all conditions.
This example is a RHD South African example and has had only one owner its entire 53 years. It presents in remarkable original condition with just a light restoration reportedly being needed. It would be a perfect opportunity to lovingly upgrade and use this fantastically original 105 series or even give it a full-blown rebirth.

The History and Paperwork

  • Original South African purchase paperwork from 1969
  • Right hand drive

The Interior

  • Excellent condition trim, fixtures and fittings
  • The original black leather seats and matching carpet
The interior of this Alfa looks to be in remarkable condition for its 53 years of service, clearly the car has had long period sat up, garaged and unused but clearly the warmer climate pays dividends when preserving cars that would simply dissolve in the much wetter UK weather.
Seats front and back are trimmed in black leather and the rear bench hardly looks as though it’s had anyone sat in it. There are no obvious rips or tears and aside from some dust and dirt they look as though they’ll shine up nicely.
The owner states that the headlining needs repair and the dashboard and steering wheel will need to be refurbished to bring the car’s interior back to its best. Everything looks to be complete in here though with no obvious missing pieces or things broken beyond fixing.

The Exterior

  • White paintwork looks to be in good original condition
  • Good condition original steel wheels
  • Various spares to come with the car
The exterior of this Alfa looks to have also fared well over its 53 years there is only some very minor dings on the driver’s side front wing and some attention needed to the bottom front of the driver’s door from what we can see. The paintwork however looks to be relatively free from excessive corrosion and stone chipping and we can imagine a buff and shine would bring back its lustre.
The wheel again looks to be in good condition with just the smallest amount of surface corrosion showing on the rim edges. All brightwork too looks to have survived well save for a thin layer of dust, which just adds to the typical ‘barn find’ aesthetic.

The photo gallery shows the spares that will come with the car which include a rear windscreen, front and rear quarterlights, new carpet, new gold cloverleaf badges, new gold trim for the centre console and various other miscellaneous bits and pieces.

The Mechanics

  • Original 1.8 litre twin cam engine
  • Hasn’t been started in 12 years but is reported to have been running and driving perfectly before storage
These Alfas rightfully enjoy a fanatical fan base with a huge aftermarket support network meaning you can get most parts without much trouble. The pairing of an aluminium engine with twin overhead cams and a 5-speed gearbox meant it was a huge step ahead of cars in the same bracket. All this meant that the Alfa was not only a pretty design, but it was also a hugely rewarding car to drive.
The owner reports that before this car’s 12-year slumber, the car had been a perfect runner with the original 1.8 litre twin cam still in the car and if the odometer, registering 6617 miles, is correct, it may well be a rare low mileage Alfa ripe for a little bit of TLC.

Summary

Alfa Romeo’s 105 series is up there with one of its most beloved models due to its fantastic styling and exceptionally rewarding driving characteristics. This example seemingly hasn’t seen much of the road during its 53 years and as such would be ripe for a return to the road with a little TLC.
