1968 Morris Minor 1000 Traveller

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Charming part-restored Traveller
  • Featured in film and TV
  • Excellent wood frame
  • Great overall condition

THE APPEAL

With its wood-panelled rear end, the Morris Minor Traveller was an icon of the British road scene from the 1950s to the 1970s – and in many ways it still is today.
Based on the Minor saloon but with a structural timber frame to the rear, the Traveller was an extremely resourceful vehicle in its day and earned its place as one of the nation’s favourite classics.
This one has been loved and cherished for most of its life – and certainly for the past 30 years where it has been owned by enthusiasts. Named Agatha-Joan by a previous owner, the current keeper has had the car for five years but has had to stop driving due to a health condition. He’s very sad to see Agatha-Joan go and is hopeful that the next owner will show the car the same love and attention that he and the previous two owners have dedicated to it.
It's a car that deserves it – wonderfully original and with a gentle patina, presented in lovely overall condition.

THE INTERIOR

  • Retrimmed red leather
  • New carpets and door cards
  • Inertia reel seatbelts
  • Replacement odometer

A lot of money has been spent in recent years on the Minor’s interior, with a complete retrim in red leather, complete with matching new door cards and fresh red carpets. It has also been fitted with inertia reel seatbelts front and rear, making it ideal for family users.
The cabin is basic, but it does come with a Smiths heater for extra comfort, while the load bay is in excellent order and is extremely useful for tools, luggage, dogs or whatever you want to throw in the back.

THE EXTERIOR

  • Unusual Peat Brown
  • Restored in early 2000s
  • Excellent wood frame
  • Good overall condition
  • Chrome and trim all correct

The Traveller is finished in one of the more unusual BMC colours – Peat Brown, which was offered from 1968 to 1971 only. It really suits the Minor’s shape, especially when off-set by the lighter brown wooden rear frame.
The wood itself is in good condition with no wet or dry rot – an important check for any Traveller as it makes up part of the car’s rear structure.
It’s an older restoration, completed in the early 2000s, but the car has been well looked after since and kept in a garage, so the body is still in fine order.

THE MECHANICS

  • BMC A-Series
  • Starts and runs well
  • Standard brakes and steering
  • Maintained by Minor specialist
The vendor reports that the Minor drives very well indeed and has been used frequently by friends whilst visiting as well as himself. It is mechanically standard and has been maintained since 2009 by a well-respected Morris Minor specialist in Oxfordshire. Prior to that there are invoices from two other respected Minor specialists showing that it has had a lifetime of care.
It started immediately from cold on the day of our photos and ran sweetly, settling to a smooth idle and with no excessive smoke.

SUMMARY

This is an absolute charmer – a sweet and cheerful example of a typically British classic, with immense character and a gentle, adorable patina. Agatha-Joan is ready for a new home and deserves a truly loving one, which is something the current owner would be delighted to see.
