THE APPEAL

Simply put, the Morris Minor is as quintessentially British as a cup of tea. If it were a politician, celebrity or some sort of historical persona, it would likely have an M.B.E or knighthood, in fact, it would probably have a statue in London to remind the population of its substantial services to the country.
It's one of those cars that frequented most streets, with many families owning one at some point in time. Affordable and versatile, the Morris Minor was very much a car for the normal person and for most it was their very introduction to driving and the automotive world. A unique and pleasant charm comes part and parcel with owning one of these icons, they were and still are very much loved and sought after with many enthusiasts placing the car at the top of their wish lists.
This 1968 two-door Morris is a fine order thanks to a bare metal restoration and engine rebuild in 2014, it certainly looks beautiful in black and with a few modern modifications carried out by the current owner, an engineer and enthusiast, the car is a great addition to any driveway.

THE INTERIOR

  • Burgundy leather trim
  • Signs of general wear
  • Replaced speedometer
  • New headlining
  • Red ceramic badges
Inside the Morris, you’re greeted with charm and a nostalgic reminder of the 1960s. The highlight of the interior has to be the central speedometer which does a great job of showcasing the 60s styling. It was replaced in 2018 after being calibrated by Speedy Cables of Swansea. The other highlight is the additional instrument cluster situated behind the steering wheel.

The aftermarket Smiths gauges look at home, and pair with the rest of the dash pleasantly. The seats were reupholstered at some point in burgundy leather, a suitable pairing to the exterior, but are showing some sign of use with a little wear and tear present. The headlining is new, however. Overall, this is a tidy and welcoming interior which is truly a lovely place to be.

THE EXTERIOR

  • Black paint with red coach line
  • Good brightwork overall
  • Very fine bodywork
Designed by British automotive pioneer Alec Issigonis, the Morris is aesthetically pleasing with its soft curves and simple styling. This bodywork is in very good shape after many hours of metal working. The black paint was applied professionally to a high standard and looks to be in very good condition with only a few blemishes.

The brightwork is showing a few signs of pitting in some areas, such as the rear lights. The bumpers look to be very good, with the rear having been extended to allow a tow hitch to be added. There are a few scratches on the section just below the boot but the chrome is quite smart.

Overall, this is a very tidy example, which the owner has invested a great deal of time and effort in.

THE MECHANICS

  • Substantial engine rebuild
  • 1098cc BMC A-Series
  • 5-speed Transmission Supplied by Frontline Developments
  • Front disc brakes with larger Morris drum brakes on the rear
  • Hydraulic clutch
  • Brake servo
  • Brand new brake lines
  • Stainless steel exhaust
  • New radiator and Kenlowe fan
  • Aftermarket alarm
  • Electronic ignition
  • new anti-roll bar
During our visit, the car was started and driven a short distance to assist the photographer. There was no hesitation from the 1098cc and it started without any dramatics. A soft, gentle purr and efficient tinkering of the engine were all that could be heard, the owner has reported no issues and up until recently had enjoyed using and driving the vehicle in fair weather conditions.

The engine was rebuilt along with some reconditioning work by KAR engine services in North Devon. Many user-orientated modifications to the vehicle have been carried out, front disc brakes including a servo have been installed and larger Morris drums on the back, plus a hydraulic clutch, a 5 speed Ford gearbox, new prop shaft and Kenlowe cooling fan. All of which provide a safer, much more enjoyable experience when driving this mighty Morris.

The engine itself has been replaced, the new unit receiving new bearings and a cylinder head built to deal with unleaded petrol.

With their clever torsion bar suspension and rack and pinion steering from standard, Morris Minor's drive very well for their age. With its subtle, yet choice upgrades, this 1968 example has to be amongst the best of the bunch out on the road. The carburation has been improved by incorporating an SU taken from a Rover / MG Metro and a K&N air filter helps with air flow. The vendor states that this 1098cc engine now produces around 50 horsepower - ample for a car as small and light as this Morris. The long-legged 5-speed gearbox and the positivity of assisted disc brakes make this a '60s car you really could still drive every day.

SUMMARY

A charming vehicle that is widely recognised as one of the most significant cars of Britain's past.

This Morris is a fine and very usable example of the two-door variant and is fantastic to drive thanks to its modern modifications.
