THE APPEAL
The Mini Cooper is a car that requires little in the way of introduction, having sprung to prominence in the swinging 60s as an icon of the fashion world and a giant-killer on the world’s rally circuits.
This one is a 1968 Morris Mini Cooper Mark II, built at the height of the sporty Mini’s popularity and a genuine UK car, finished in the hugely appealing colour scheme of Almond Green with a Snowberry White roof.
Fresh from an extensive restoration, where it was stripped back to bare metal and comprehensively rebuilt, the Mini is an absolute stunner and is presented in fabulous order throughout, ready to show and enjoy as one of the nicest and best-restored cars on the circuit.
THE HISTORY AND PAPERWORK
- UK V5C
- Tax and MOT exempt
- Copy of Mini Magazine featuring an in-depth feature on its restoration
- British Motor Heritage certificate showing the original colour scheme to be correct and that the car was supplied new by Appleyard’s of Leeds.
- Invoice from Newton Commercial documenting £1,200 of interior parts
- Invoice from Mini Spares documenting lots of body and mechanical components for restoration
THE INTERIOR
- Newton Commercial interior
- Completely retrimmed and refurbished
- Brand new carpets
- Immaculately presented
Detail is the key with this restoration and the interior is one of the areas where it really shows through. The car was treated to an entire internal retrim using a high-quality interior courtesy of Newton Commercial, who are renowned as one of the UK's best known and most-respected suppliers of authentically styled classic car trim.
The black seats are immaculate, as you'd expect from a car that's fresh from a restoration, whilst the headlining, inner door trims and carpets are also superb.
The instrumentation is simplicity itself, incorporating a central speedometer, fuel gauge, temperature gauge and oil pressure meter. It also comes with a period option Smiths heater, but other than that it's gloriously basic with sliding side windows and a simple two-spoke steering wheel.
Inside the boot, things are equally well presented with a full-size spare wheel along with a trimmed-to-fit boot carpet.
THE EXTERIOR
- Complete bare metal respray
- Original colour scheme
- New panels and chrome
- Incredible condition
The shell of the Mini was extensively rebuilt during its restoration, with new metal in the sills, floors, bulkhead, a-pillars and other areas where previous corrosion was cut out and new metal let in. New wings, doors and boot panels were fitted and the car was treated to a beautiful, high-quality paint job in its original colour scheme of Almond Green body work with a Snowberry White roof. It's a superbly presented car, with near-perfect chrome and brightwork.
Underneath, the Mini is as spotlessly presented as it is on top and it's said to be completely rot-free as a result of its recent restoration. The steel wheels were shotblasted and painted and are in equally great condition, shod with new Yokohama rubber.
THE MECHANICS
- 998cc BMC A-series
- Four-speed manual
- Twin SU carburettors
- Fantastic engine bay and suspension detail
You only have to look at the level of detail in the engine bay and around the steering and suspension components to see that the Cooper has been restored to a very high standard indeed. It has wanted for nothing and the 998cc engine was also overhauled as part of the car’s rebuild process.
it's a lovely little twin-carb unit that starts on the button and soon settles to a steady but eager idle, while the four-speed manual transmission operates without fault. The vendor reports that the car is an absolute joy to drive with absolutely no running faults or issues. It also comes with a brand-new stainless steel exhaust system.
SUMMARY
If you want a truly fantastic example of one of the all-time classic British icons, then this Morris Mini Cooper should almost certainly be on your hit list. It's a wonderful restoration, carried out to an exceptionally high standard and in one of the most timeless colour schemes.
