- Original UK right hand drive car
The Appeal
Introduced in 1965, the TR4A appears very similar to its predecessor the TR4, but most notably it introduced independent rear suspension in lieu of a live rear axle and leaf springs.
If you’re looking for a classic roadster that you will be able to really cover some miles in, then this Triumph TR4A is undoubtedly worth considering. This Triumph’s previous owners have expended considerable time and money to ensure that mechanically this car is very healthy indeed.
The History and Paperwork
- V5C present
- MOT valid until June 2023 (although exempt)
- Considerable collection of invoices for work and regular servicing
- Work to the clutch and cooling system in March 2017 totalling £2,299.50
- Evidence of significant engine work in November 2017 costing £7,006.74
The Interior
- Black vinyl upholstery with white piping
- Burr walnut veneer dashboard
- All the instrumentation and switchgear is in good condition
On the inside, the TR4A is every inch the quintessential British roadster. You are greeted by swathes of walnut adorning the dashboard and there is a plentiful supply of instruments telling you all you need to know about the state of the mechanicals. Mounted centrally, you’ll find an array of Lucas switchgear and the vendor informs us that everything works as it should.
Hard-wearing black vinyl upholstery is finished off nicely with some contrasting white piping and looks to be in very good condition. We couldn’t see any damage or excessive wear to the seats or door cards and the same goes to the controls. The carpeting remains eminently serviceable in both footwells and inside the boot where you will also find a full-size spare wheel.
The Exterior
- Attractive red paintwork
- Convertible hood operates smoothly and is in good shape
- Very smart brightwork
While a great deal of attention has been paid to this car’s mechanicals, the bodywork certainly hasn’t been neglected and it presents exceedingly well. Red always suits two seater roadsters and this Triumph really looks the part.
Besides the badge on the rear reminding people of the independent rear suspension, the TR4A has additional chrome trims on the front wings which incorporate the indicator repeaters and sidelights. These are in great condition, as are the remaining badges and the chromework on the bumpers and grill.
With styling by Giovani Michelotti, the TR4A is a very handsome machine. You stare down a long bonnet with a prominent power bulge and the hooded headlamps are very distinctive. The paintwork looks to be in very good overall condition and the bodywork appears very straight. Underneath too, all seems to be in great condition with no obvious signs of damage or corrosion.
It sits upon wire wheels with spinners and they are shod with period-looking Goodyear radial tyres.
The vendor informs us that the fabric hood operates exactly as it should and we note that it is in very good shape with no misting to the window elements.
The Mechanics
- 2138cc inline four with Overdrive
- Very smart under the bonnet
- Has been subject to a great deal of work which is evidenced in the collection of invoices
Mechanically, this Triumph has received a great deal of attention in recent years. The brakes and clutch have been extensively overhauled with new master cylinders, wheel cylinders and callipers for the brakes and replacement of all the fluids.
Great care has been taken to ensure that there is no slack in the driveline and no noises or vibrations that shouldn’t be there. Speaking of fluids, the fuel pump has been replaced along with the water pump, thermostat, radiator / heater hoses and antifreeze. However please bear in mind the fuel gauge is temperamental and will occasionally read inaccurately.
Engine work has also been extensive, with the crankshaft polished and balanced along with the connecting rods and pistons. The cam, main engine and big end bearings have been replaced as have the thrust washer, oil pump and exhaust system.
The collection of invoices that accompany the car provide a more complete list but, as you can see, this Triumph has been doted upon in recent years and lifting the bonnet, you can really tell.
Summary
Having been maintained to a very high standard and featuring the improved independent rear suspension, this Triumph TR4A has to be amongst the most capable ‘60s British roadsters around. If you’re looking for a classic you can take on big road trips, we think this would be a great option.
