The Appeal
A British built classic with Italian styling the TR4A looks as good today as it did when it first launched. From the distinctive Surrey top to the low stance this two seater sports car offers a fantastic classic driving experience with lots of style.
This TR4A is owned and has been restored by a mechanic and garage owner (who’s family run garage used to be the Triumph dealer for the area) and is in excellent condition throughout. With several choice upgrades carried out during the restoration including a Triumph 2.5l six cylinder engine, gearbox with overdrive and adjustable telescopic shocks all round it provides the driving experience the TR4 always should have had.
As well as the extensive mechanical restoration, the current owner has also carried out a full body-off respray in metallic grey and fitted wire-spoke wheels, making this one of the best looking TR4A’s we have seen. It’s a great looking car from any angle and just begs to be driven.

- Wood dashboard in fantastic condition
- Modern stereo and speakers

The interior of the Triumph TR4 provides a fantastic classic motoring experience with the perfect mixture of wood, chrome and comfy seats, but few look quite as good as this. Fully retrimmed in Old Red, with wool carpeting and soundproofing underlay and in excellent condition throughout it looks simply fantastic as well as providing an exceptionally comfortable and enjoyable driving experience.
The wooden dashboard is in very good condition with all of the dials and surround in similarly excellent condition. The retrimmed seats show no signs of use, let alone wear and the wool carpeting is sumptuous.
The Exterior
- Finished in metallic grey
- Surrey top with soft top fitted and spare hard top
- Excellent overall condition
- Painted wire spoke wheels in fantastic condition
- Panel gaps/shut lines all look good
- Brightwork in overall excellent condition with some light pitting visible on the rear bumper
- Some very minor bubbling above the n/s/r lights and o/s/r seam at the boot aperture
The TR4A is a good looking car, but fitted with the wire spoke wheels and finished in metallic grey it's a great looking car. From the distinctive bump in the bonnet to the low stance the Italian styling gives this British classic a ton of aesthetic appeal.
Benefitting from a full body-off respray the exterior of this car presents excellently. The metallic dark grey suits the styling of the TR4A perfectly and with the tiny exception noted above is in fantastic condition. All of the wheels present perfectly and the light lenses, badges and trim are all very good. The car has the Surrey top with the middle soft section fitted and comes with a spare hard top in black that would benefit from new headlining.
The Mechanics
- Extensive mechanical restoration
- Engine bay and underside in excellent condition
- Triumph 2.5l six cylinder engine fitted
- Electronic ignition
- Spin-on oil filter adapter
- Gearbox with overdrive
- Starts easily, idles well and sounds fantastic
- New fully adjustable independent suspension all round
- Completely overhauled/ renewed braking system including the fitting of servo assistance
- Twin HIF SU carburettors
- TR6 Exhaust
- All of the Firestone tyres have lots of tread
As with the rest of this car the mechanical elements present excellently. WIth the current owner being a garage owner and the kind of person who has a two post lift at home you know this car has been done right. We were particularly impressed with the condition of the underside, as you can see from the photos it’s immaculate, from the bell housing to the exhaust it all presents superbly.
The car starts easily on a turn of the key, idling well and the owner reports that it drives exactly as it should, pulling well and shifting easily. The six cylinder Triumph engine sounds fantastic and there are no unusual noises or sounds.
Summary
This is a fantastic example of a TR4A owned by someone who is both passionate and knowledgeable about cars. It’s been extensively restored to a very high standard and the owner tells us that prior to his acquisition of the vehicle in 2011 the previous owner used to have it serviced at his garage and was in the same family ownership from new.
In excellent condition inside and out (and underneath!), with the larger 2.5l Triumph engine fitted along with servo assisted brakes, adjustable telescopic shock absorbers and wire wheels it provides the ultimate TR4A experience. It’s a gorgeous car, perfect for shows or just enjoying on the open road, this is one you don’t want to miss.
