1967 Triumph TR4 A IRS

***Vendor supplied images***

Highlights

  • Desirable IRS model, denoting independent rear suspension
  • Smartly presented in a very fetching colour scheme
  • Reportedly runs and drives very well indeed

The Appeal

The TR4 A represents a sweet spot in the Triumph TR4’s life. Earlier cars had been praised for their performance but some felt it was let down by a rather agricultural leaf sprung live axle at the rear.
The last of the carbureted four-cylinder cars, but the first to feature independent rear suspension, the TR4 offers impressive handling and a more refined ride than its predecessors.
Here we have a rather smart 1967 example in left-hand drive. Originally supplied to Georgia in the United States, it is now registered in Denmark where it awaits its new owner.

The History and Paperwork

  • Factory left-hand drive
  • Supplied new in Georgia USA
  • Imported to Denmark in 2003
  • We’re informed that the car has a Danish title and registration number
  • The vendor reports that it has been fully serviced and inspected recently
  • The five-figure odometer displays a mere 411 miles, suggesting it has in fact covered 100,411 miles, although we’re unable to verify the exact mileage

The Interior

  • Upholstered in black vinyl
  • Veneered dashboard
  • Moto-Lita steering wheel
This Triumph’s interior presents immensely well with few signs of wear and no damage we could see. The vinyl upholstery all looks to be in very good order and there is little indication of heavy use, with no excessive creating to the seats or any blemishes of note to the other trims.
A veneered dashboard adds a touch of luxury and the array of Jaeger instruments provide that sporty feel the archetypal British roadster always does well. It appears there are a couple of extra holes for switchgear that’s no longer fitted, but otherwise the dashboard presents really well with no damage apparent to the veneer fascia or the vinyl top piece.
We couldn’t see much wear to the carpeting, and with the roof in its raised position, the inside of the fabric looks to be in nice shape as well. We enjoy the period correct stereo and the overall period feel this whole interior exudes.

The Exterior

  • Attractive green paintwork
  • Soft-top roof in very good condition
  • Wire wheels with ‘knock-off’ spinners
The TR4’s styling evokes the popular image of the British sports car, dainty even by the standards of the day and with a distinctive front end punctuated by the oversized headlamps.
Green paintwork is almost guaranteed to suit a British roadster of this period and it certainly looks the part on this Triumph. There are very few blemishes of any note and we couldn’t see any obvious signs of corrosion. The bodywork looks to be really straight and the vendor points out that the panel gaps are really even all round the vehicle.
All the chrome looks to be in good shape too and we particularly like the wire wheels which look to be in lovely order. They’re shod with high quality Avon tyres and these too look in nice condition. The vendor informs us that all the chrome is original, which would suggest it has survived remarkably well.
The soft-top roof raises and lowers as it should and the fabric appears in really nice shape.

The Mechanics

  • 2.2-litre four cylinder engine
  • Four-speed manual gearbox
  • Independent rear suspension
It’s a classic combination: with rear-wheel drive, an engine in the front and a manual gearbox in a small sports car, you can’t really go wrong.
It should come as no surprise then that this Triumph is said to drive brilliantly. We’re informed there have been no mechanical alterations and it apparently drives without fault.

Summary

If you’ve always fancied a British sports car, this TR4 A would be a great option. Presented in a classic colour scheme and a choice specification, we’re sure it will provide fun, open-top motoring for years to come.
