1967 Mercedes-Benz 250SL Pagoda

Highlights

  • Originally supplied to the Netherlands and continues to reside there
  • Both soft top and hard top roofs are in very good condition
  • Beautifully presented both inside and out
  • Still retains Dutch registration

The Appeal

Mercedes-Benz forged their reputation with cars that brought together style, build quality and performance in equal measure. The W113 SL exemplifies this winning combination and you had to pay up for it in period, with a Pagoda costing twice as much as a 4.2-litre Jaguar E-Type.
Here we have a charming 1967 250SL that has resided in the Netherlands for its whole life. It is beautifully presented inside and out and benefits from Mercedes’ very capable 4-speed automatic gearbox. Resplendent in the pleasing colour combination of dark blue with a cream interior, this SL would make a fabulous edition to any car collection.

The History and Paperwork

  • The vendor informs us that this car was delivered new to the Netherlands
  • Still retains Dutch registration
  • Evidence of past sympathetic restoration work

The Interior

  • Cream vinyl seats present really well
  • Retains its period-correct Becker radio
  • Very smart inside the boot
Pagodas have wonderful interiors and this 250SL is no exception. The cream upholstery lends the cabin a light and airy feel even with the roof up and the occasional use of woodwork adds to the general ambiance of quality.
There is very little wear anywhere we could see and it looks as if some sympathetic retrimming work has been carried to ensure this Mercedes-Benz continues to look its best. Besides some gentle patination on a few components, there is no damage to note and everything looks to be in good, original condition. The period-correct Becker radio is a nice touch and we couldn’t see any evidence of later additions to the dashboard or elsewhere in the cockpit.
The boot is really smart inside and retains its rubber matting and a cover over the full-size spare wheel.

The Exterior

  • Blue paintwork
  • Soft top roof looks to be quite new
  • Hardtop present and in good order
The blue exterior paintwork offers the perfect contrast to the cream interior and is a classic combination that always works well. We couldn’t see any damage to the paint or bodywork and the vendor informs us that it is in very good overall condition.
There is a lot of trim on a W113 SL and we’re pleased to report that it is all in very good shape on this example, with no damage or pitting we could discern. The same goes for the glass and light lenses which all present well.
The soft top roof is also finished in blue and looks to be quite a recent replacement. For the colder months, this SL also has its hard top and they look particularly elegant when this is fitted.
Its steel wheels are complete with hubcaps and shod with white-band tyres which really suit the car.

The Mechanics

  • 2.5-litre straight-six
  • 4-speed automatic gearbox
As the medium-size engine offered in the W113 SL, this 250’s straight-six provides ample performance via a 4-speed automatic gearbox. Performance is brisk rather than sporty which suits the character of the car and the vendor informs us that this example drives well.

Summary

Mercedes-Benz SLs of this period are undoubtedly amongst the most elegant cars of the 20th century.
If you’re looking for a classic convertible that is stylish, but also well enough put together and powerful enough to keep pace with the modern world, a Pagoda is certainly the way to go.
