1967 Mercedes-Benz 250 SL Pagoda

Highlights

  • 28,000 recorded miles from new
  • Very rare original right-hand drive 250 SL
  • One owner since 1989 and only two since new
  • Custom made long-range fuel tank

The Appeal

The gracious styling of the Pagoda is one of those designs which seems to never go out of fashion. With its tall headlamps, distinctive upturned roof and long bonnet, this car looks every bit as suave as the day it left the factory.
It has been in its current ownership since 1989, only its second, in which time the car received regular yet sparing use. More recently, it has covered fewer miles per year but still reportedly been maintained to the same high standard.
Now presented in remarkably good and very useable condition and retaining it's original interior and smart bodywork, this Pagoda is the kind of car you’d be proud to arrive in. And its rarity as a factory right-hand drive 250 SL in such original condition makes it quite a special car indeed!

The History and Paperwork

  • First registered 20th November 1967
  • Very rare factory original RHD 250 SL
  • Purchased by the current owner in 1989
  • The car was reportedly stored off the road for 20 years, hence the low indicated mileage
  • Road Tax and MOT exempt
  • MOT valid until January 2024, with no advisories
  • Extensive history file
  • Historic MOT certificates dating back to 1989
  • Significant invoices for parts and servicing, said to total over £30,000
  • Restoration work carried out in the mid 1990s
  • Previously used by the owner as a daily driver
  • Reportedly diligently maintained regardless of cost

 The Interior

  • Excellent deep blue leather upholstery
  • Black carpets beautifully fitted and trimmed
  • Stylish dashboard with plenty of chrome and an original radio
The interior of this Mercedes exudes classic ‘60s elegance. Upon opening the door, you are met with the sight of gently mellowed leather upholstery and chrome flashes throughout.
The seats appear to have been well trimmed, the car having reportedly been the subject of a retrim in the 1990s. They have since gained an air of gentle use, with some light creasing evident but no significant scuffs, stains or tears that we could see. They are a little worn and faded in places there is a split near the top of the driver’s seat.
Similarly excellent carpets line the floors. They remain clean and tidy, with little sign of wear from what we could see. Up above, the hardtop headlining appears to be original and shows signs of light use. The door cards reportedly show a little staining from damp.
In front of the driver sits the distinctive steering wheel, with its padded centre boss and chrome horn ring. The dashboard features thick padding, top and bottom which appears to be well preserved. And in between, the instruments are bold and clear. Chrome bezels and switches abound, and the original radio is a fascinating feature. There’s a little patina to the paint on the dashboard , but nothing which detracts from the overall appeal of the interior.
To the rear, the spacious bot features a full size spare wheel and an aluminium auxiliary reserve fuel tank.

 The Exterior

  • Black over white paint work
  • Good panel gaps and shut lines
  • Original steel wheels with colour-matched hubcaps
The white paintwork is in generally good condition but there is a little blistering in places. And the black painted hardtop is exhibiting a little more blistering, especially in its rear corners.
Chrome trim adorns the front of the car, with wide bumpers and a large three-pointed star proudly displayed in the centre. The chrome plating appears to be very well presented, with no obvious signs of pitting or damage we could see. Similarly, the rubber trim pieces are free from cracks and UV damage.
The original 14-inch steel wheels still wear their distinctive colour-matched hubcaps, which finishes the car off very nicely. They are fitted with a set of Falken tyres which were reportedly fitted in 2015 and are said to have covered less than 2000 miles since.
Underneath, the structure of the car is said to be solid and there are no obvious signs of damage or corrosion. The car has previously been treated with a coat of protective underseal.

 The Mechanics

  • 2.5-litre straight-six engine
  • Extensive invoices for servicing and parts
  • Custom-made high capacity fuel tank fitted
The smooth-running straight-six engine at the heart of this Pagoda gives it spritely performance to match its stunning good looks. Under the forward-hinged bonnet the engine bay is clean and tidy, without being minutely detailed. It looks like the radiator may have been renewed, along with some of the hoses.
The exhaust appears to be a newer stainless steel system, and the fuel system has been replaced. A custom-made fuel tank was fabricated from aluminium and includes an auxiliary tank in the boot, which is plumbed into the main tank.
The car comes with a thick folder containing plenty of service records, MOT certificates and invoices for parts and servicing.

Summary

A very good example of the ever-desirable 250 SL Pagoda, in rare original right-hand drive guise. It is a great useable classic, which has clearly been well cared for and enjoyed by its previous owners.
