The Appeal

There’s something enduringly appealing about the Maserati Quattroporte. The name has survived the decades and is still in use today, so it is interesting to see an early version of the model. This is an excellent example of a Quattroporte I, which had been released in 1963, then in 1966 it received a redesigned interior, twin headlamps, and a solid read axle. Speeds of 200 km/h were reportedly achievable, a very respectable performance for a four door saloon in the 1960s.
Having been sold new in Italy in 1967, this car was then exported to France in the mid 1980s and we are told that it was occasionally used by the deposed Shah of Iran, Reza Pahlevi, during his holidays in Paris
This car benefits from having been repainted in its original ‘Argento Auteuil’ and retains its original interior in exceptionally good condition. We also understand that it has had a recent engine rebuild by a specialist in Modena, as well as a mechanical overhaul of many other components. These all add up to make a car which is both beautiful and useable.

The History and Paperwork

  • First registered on 12th May 1967 to ‘sync Amedeo Natoli di V.A.P d’Enieves &C, Milan
  • Exported to France in mid 1980s
  • Reportedly used by the Shah if Iran, Reza Pahlavi when on holiday in France
  • Reimported to Italy in 2001 by a Maserati collector in Venice
  • Awarded a Gold Plate by the ASI (Italian branch of FIVA), for its originality
  • ‘Carta di Circolazione’ included

The Interior

  • Exceptionally original interior
  • Factory fitted front seat belts and headrests
  • Dashboard re-veneered
There’s something indescribably intoxicating about an original interior, especially if it’s leather. Perhaps it’s because it’s where we interact with a car when we’re driving. The original leather found on the seats and the centre console has been beautifully worn by gentle use and has acquired a beautiful patina. The carpets are said to be similarly original and remain in good condition for their age.
This interior has been improved by the addition of front headrests and seatbelts, which were options from the factory. The headlining is clean and secure and the door cards are well preserved.
The vendor tells us that the dashboard has been re-veneered, and it looks all the better for it. There is a row of tactile toggle switches in the centre and the instrument cluster is well appointed.
As it is now 55 years old, the interior of this Maserati has acquired a few bumps and scuffs as we would expect. But we believe these add to the car’s charming character.

The Exterior

  • Repainted in ‘Argento Auteuil’ metallic silver
  • Chrome fittings said to be original
  • Wheels refurbished by Campagnolo factory
The sleek lines of this Quattroporte are sure to turn heads wherever it goes. We’re sure that onlookers won’t fail to be impressed by the car’s beautiful styling and excellent state of preservation.
We are told by the vendor that the car has been resprayed in the correct shade of ‘Argento Auteuil’ metallic silver. This paintwork appears to remain in excellent condition, and the colour looks fantastic on this car.
All the chrome trim is said to be original and remains in original condition, with very little sign of any damage to be found. Similarly, the wheels are beautifully presented, having reportedly been refurbished and chrome plated by the Campagnolo factory. The Dunlop tyres are said to have been newly fitted.

The Mechanics

  • Engine fully rebuilt 2,500 km ago
  • Brakes and suspension overhauled
  • New clutch and battery
Fitted with a 4,136cc V8 engine, the Quattroporte was one of the few saloon card of the sixties which could reach speeds of 200 km/h. This was an impressive performance at the time, with Maserati claiming an official top speed of 230km/h.
The seller states that this car’s engine was rebuilt by the TONI workshop in Modena, who completed the work around ten years ago. This will give the next owner peace of mind when using this grand tourer as originally intended.
We are told that the car also benefits from a new clutch, as well as overhauled suspension and brakes and a new battery. The five-speed manual transmission sends the V8’s power to the rear wheels.

Summary

It’s not often that a beautiful car such as this Maserati comes along, let alone one with such an original interior, repainted bodywork and having had an extensive mechanical overhaul.
We’re sure you’ll agree that this makes for quite the combination, and results in a car which begs to be driven and admired.
