1967 Land Rover Series IIA 88”

Highlights

  • Good clean example
  • Capable both on and off road
  • Ex RAF

The Background

The Series II was introduced in 1958 ten years after the launch of the first Land Rover. With both extensive mechanical and aesthetic changes the Series II took everything that the Series I did and improved upon it.

The new Land Rover was an instant success and is regarded by many as being the best of the “Series” Land Rovers. Notably the II A was the last to feature the headlight on the grille before they were moved to the wings in 1969, where they have remained.
The Land Rover Series II offered an exceptional practical vehicle that could be fully repaired in the field with limited tools. With permanent rear wheel drive and the option to engage the front to give four wheel drive, it was practical both on road and off road. Competition from the likes of the Austin Gypsy was no match for the Series II which dominated the 4WD market and just as it’s descendant the Defender does today.

The History

The current owner acquired the car last October in a swap for an MG Midget. The current owner is a true classic car enthusiast and has ensured the Land Rover has always been kept garaged, which shows in the condition of this vehicle.
Being an ex RAF there are some factory modifications that the MOD use on their Land Rovers. This includes the fuel tank being under the front passenger seat as shown in the images and quick release bonnet catches to enable rapid repairs in the field.

The Paperwork

Whilst the Land Rover comes with only the log book, it is often possible to find much of the history of ex RAF Land Rovers from various sources such as the RAF museum.

The Interior

Series II Land Rovers aren’t known for their luxurious interiors, however the seats are comfy, visibility is excellent and there is a plethora of storage. This particular Series II even has the optional cabin heater fitted, a welcome addition in our climate! The interior is in good condition throughout, you can tell it’s been well looked after and everything works as it should.

The Exterior

The exterior is in very good overall condition and as with all of the Land Rovers benefits from an aluminium body completely eliminating the risk of rust on the body panels that other vehicles of this vintage suffer from. This, combined with the chassis having been recently repainted, mean that this is a very clean example of a Series II. Finished in the distinctive Blue Grey paint of the RAF and with the yellow roundel still present this is a fantastic example of an MOD Land Rover.

The Mechanics

The Land Rover starts easily from cold and runs well with no unexpected noises apparent, it drives smoothly and the 2/4WD selector works well. These Land Rovers were built to last and this one has been well maintained, as such it provides a fantastic ready to drive example that would be perfect for someone looking for a mechanically sound Series II.

Whilst you might not win many races, it pulls well and this Series II would make for a capable off-roader or a perfect candidate for a full restoration project, or even just an everyday driver thanks to the useful overdrive system.
The current owner has stripped back the chassis to bare metal and painted it, as can be seen in the images the underside is in very good condition.

The Appeal

The Land Rover Series and now Defender range is the stuff of legends. Used on every continent and for almost every imaginable use, from ambulances, through search and rescue, to the school run the classic shape is instantly recognisable. Built with simplicity in mind to enable ease of maintenance and modification, they make fantastic vehicles no matter what you do with them.

The series II is regarded by many as the epitome of the Land Rover Design and is the last one to feature the lights on the grille before they were moved onto the wings.

This series II is ready to drive and with a recent service and overall great mechanical condition it will provide the new owner with a reliable classic that's ready for both on and off road use. If you’d love a Landy (and who wouldn’t!) this Series II is not to be missed.
