The Appeal

The UK’s take on the iconic Willys Jeep really needs no introduction with these go-anywhere vehicles having been part of the automotive landscape for over 70 years. With Series I prices having continued to soar, this  Series IIA represents a good entry point for classic Land Rover ownership. Many Land Rover purists consider the IIA to be the most durable and hardy Series model available too.
These are remarkable vehicles. Incredibly able, easily maintained and repaired and overflowing with quirks and charm. They provide a real antidote to the increasing sanitised and anodyne modern car driving experience.

The History and Paperwork

 • A UK built and supplied Land Rover in an 88” pickup type configuration
 • Understood by the current owner to have spent some of its early life in the ownership of British Rail Engineering Ltd
 • Acquired by the current owner in February 2021 with a view to improving and then daily use
 • Work was completed in May 2022 with the vehicle reluctantly for sale due to other projects requiring attention
 • The vehicle comes with a current V5 in the name of the owner
 • A large collection of invoices
 • Classified as a Historic Vehicle, the Land Rover is understood to be MOT and VED exempt
 • MOT until May 2023

The Interior

 • The interior of the Land Rover is spartan as is the norm for the Series vehicles
 • Surfaces are predominantly painted in the Bronze Green body colour
 • Pedals, coloured lever knobs and Bakelite steering wheel all appear to be original and in good condition
 • The Series II and IIA signature centre mounted dials and black painted surround appear original too
 • The three-abreast seats have been fitted with more modern Range Rover Classic seat cushions for extra comfort
 • Seats are dressed in a hard-wearing, blue-grey tweed fabric and are reported to be in good used condition overall
 • The owner reports that no heater is currently present but is an easy retrofit item
Land Rovers of this period are a world apart when compared to their modern cousins. Spartan yet full of character would be a suitable description, yet none the worse for it either. With ample room for three abreast, every journey in a Series Land Rover is one to be relished and not quickly forgotten.

The Exterior

 • Presenting well indeed in newly painted Bronze Green (LRC001)
 • The vehicle has been diligently roller painted to a good, and Land Rover appropriate standard
 • The steel wheels have been fully refurbished and repainted in a period-correct Limestone colour
 • The spare wheel has also been similarly refurbished
 • A spare wheel bonnet mounting is present should the new owner wish to bonnet mount the spare wheel
 • Tyres are a matching set of brand new 205/80R 16 Road Terrain items
 • The vehicle boasts a brand-new Exmoor Trim full tilt canvas roof and sticks
 • The roof has been weatherproofed but has yet to have ben used in the rain
 • The Land Rover has been fitted with all new galvanised external trim throughout
 • New cast Land Rover badges and period-correct round wing mirrors have been fitted
 • Vendor reports works to the chassis include a new rear crossmember, new suspension hangers and a new front dumbiron
 • The chassis has been zinc and oxide protected, painted, and filled with wax oil
 •  Vendor reports the bulkhead has also been addressed with a new passenger side floor fitted together with a new off-side A pillar and kick plate
The Series IIA looks to be in great and refreshingly period-correct state. The owner has skilfully managed to maintain the vehicle's character, with the vehicle still proudly wearing the odd minor scuff and dent from a long and proud life as a go-anywhere workhorse.

The Mechanics

The vendor reports the erstwhile 2.25L four-cylinder petrol engine has been well maintained, with reported works including:
 • A rebuilt and tuned Weber Carburettor
 • New HT leads, spark plugs, coil-starter motor, alternator, electronic fuel pump and fan
 • A new fuel tank has been fitted together with new fuel lines throughout
 • The gearbox has been recommissioned and a new clutch master and slave cylinder fitted
 • Drum brakes have been fully refurbished together with new brake lines and a new brake master cylinder
 • A new custom wiring harness has been fitted together with new external lights all round
 • New shock absorbers have been fitted front and back
 • Front steering arm replacement

Summary

A Series Land Rover is so iconic that it seems at home anywhere and everywhere. Just as at home outside a stately home as it is in a muddy bog, this is a classless, timeless piece of automotive design adored worldwide.
Seemingly presented in very good condition for its age, this Series IIA still retains its Land Rover charm. As the current owner eloquently puts it - “It drives as a Series Land Rover should. It’s noisy, smelly and drives beautifully!”
