The Appeal
For fans of the Mustang, the late 60s cars are prime examples of the breed. Facelifted in 1967, many key styling features (such as the concave rear lights and side vents) were added at this time. Later generations got bigger, heavier and slower, so the facelifted first generation cars really are the ones to have.
This lovely example is a 1967 Hardtop model (also known as the “notchback”). With a meaty 4.7-litre V8 under the hood and finished in the classic green-over-tan colour scheme, it makes for a desirable and collectible vehicle – and a great way to get into classic American car ownership.

This facelifted first generation Mustang offered more interior space and a higher specification over the original model. It shows too, you can easily accommodate four adults in comfort in this cabin. The seats are wide and comfortable, and there’s plenty of light thanks to a generous glass area.
At some point, the seats have been retrimmed in fresh tan vinyl. As such, they present very well, with minor wear from use, but no damage or tears that we could discern. Both the front and rear seats feature vintage style lap-belts.
Looking at the dashboard, it presents nicely, with a good level of natural patina to the controls and instruments. The stainless brightwork is all intact and present, being in good condition. Likewise the door cards and door furniture all look well, with no notable damage or significant wear. There are minor blemishes and scuffs, as you’d expect from a vehicle of this age, but nothing that would cause us any concern. We’re assured by the owner that all the controls and cabin features operate as they should.
The headlining appears to be the original cream vinyl item. It is intact and free from significant stains and damage, neither is it showing signs of sagging. It does have a small tear in the rear compartment that appears to be a couple of inches long, but this should be relatively easy to have rectified.
Running through the cabin is a dark brown carpet with tan coloured over-mats front and back. The front mats bear the Mustang logo and are in more than reasonable condition.
The Exterior
- Finished in Highland Green Metallic
- Original Torq-Thrust D wheels
While not as popular as the Fastback shape made famous by Bullitt, we really like the 3-box design of the hardtop. It’s a more subtle and understated car – if a 4.7-litre V8 muscle car can ever be considered subtle.
The owner believes that the car has been restored and resprayed at some point, but has no paperwork to confirm this. It is currently wearing the classic Bullitt colour scheme of Highland Green Metallic though. It’s a lovely colour and suits the car well. Here it presents well, with a few minor blemishes and a couple of small areas of bubbling, but otherwise it appears to be in fine condition. All of the panels and trim looks straight and true, with no obvious signs of damage or corrosion. The Californian weather seems to have preserved this old Pony Car remarkably well.
With nice quality stainless brightwork and badging, all of which is complete and looks very well, this Mustang is a very handsome vehicle. It’s helped in no small degree by the original American Racing Torq-Thrust D wheels. These 5-spoke 15” alloys are finished with black centres and polished lips, and wrapped in good quality Toyo tyres with plenty of tread. The wheels are in very good condition, with no evidence of kerb damage or lacquer peel.
Like the main bodywork, the sills and valances look to be in good order. The rest of the underside is likewise straight and solid, with evidence of the usual surface corrosion on a number of components, but nothing that we would consider out of the ordinary or worrisome.
Overall, it presents as a well-kept, solid and very usable classic muscle car.
The Mechanics
- 4.7-litre ‘small block’ V8 (289 cu in)
- ‘C’ code engine with twin barrel carburettor
- 3-speed automatic transmission
With what is, by European standards, a mighty 4.7-litre V8 pushing 200 bhp to the rear wheels, this pretty classic has plenty of go and noise to back up its looks. With a surprisingly light weight of just over 1,300Kg, that power goes a long way too, offering good performance even with this ‘small block’ engine.
The owner has no paperwork to confirm works that have been undertaken prior to their ownership, but from what we have seen it would appear that a number of engine components have been replaced at some point. The air cleaner, expansion bottles and various hoses, pipes and ancillaries all appear to have been refreshed.
Overall the engine bay looks very clean and tidy, with no evidence we saw of leaks, heating problems or any other issues. In fact, the owner assures us that the car drives very well, accelerating, braking and handling as would be expected, with no mechanical complications.
Summary
It’s difficult not to love a first generation Mustang. They’re burnt into our consciousness as the epitome of the American muscle car.
This 1967 facelift Hardtop is a great way to be introduced to the breed too – that small black V8 is an excellent engine, and when twinned with the elegant Hardtop styling and that Highland Green Metallic finish, makes a compelling case for itself.
